Car Tyres
Hi,
Need a couple of new front tyres for my car.
As we are now going into autumn / winter I'm considering some winter tyres.
Are they really that better for wet / winter use or is it all a big con??

Re: Car Tyres
From what I've heard if you are going for winter tyres then you really need to get all 4 tyres. Just having them on the front can destabilise the car.

Re: Car Tyres
You don't use winter tyres as a permanent replacement for your usual ones. You get four of them and put them on the car in the winter, then take them off again in the spring.

Re: Car Tyres
Really? Got any links to that claim? I know you said "heard" but just wondered if there was any hard evidence to back that up.
Car is front wheel drive, btw but I get what you are saying.

The ones I'm looking at suggest they can be used all year round.

Fitting winter tyres to two wheels of a modern car can seriously destabilise the car, particularly on a descent, so is not to be contemplated. We are not in the 1960s any longer when cars and tyres were comparatively unsophisticated and when this was a viable option.

If they are saying they can be used all year then they are all-weather tyres, not proper winter tyres.

Re: Car Tyres
TBH if feel there is no need for winter tyres in the UK, we don't get that bad a winter.

Re: Car Tyres
iirc, winter tyres are softer and will wear more quickly......don't put them on yet.

I agree ,we don't get consistently cold temps for long enough to justify the expense .A good quality all year tyre is adequate imo

OK guys and girls - thanks for the info. Guess that kinda tells me I need to do all 4, or not bother with them.
I think I'll get some decent tyres and some snow socks.
Anybody got any suggestions as to manufacturer?
Looking for good wet weather, braking and low road noise. I've seen some Dunlops Sport 01's which fit that spec - anybody had expeience of those?

depends what you drive i suppose .The Continental tyres on my van have lasted for 40k and still have plenty of tread left ,probably another 10k ,they cost £110 each but well worth the expense imo

Well a van can't wheelspin off the line, can it. no wonder you're tyres are lasting so long
