Diesel smells ?

Hi all,

I wondering if anyone has any ideas on getting rid of strong smells in this case diesel I had a jerrycan full of it, for a jetting unit, anycase it leaked abit and even though this was in my carpeted boot...the whole car stinks, I spayed it with frabreeze also leaving the windows open as much as possible but it is not helping.

I'm off next weekend (2nd and 3rd sep, 4 of us) and I have to drive and I don't want us to be putting up with this all the time.

I'm welcome to try pretty much anything so welcome any suggestions

Re: Diesel smells ?

Apart from taking out the carpet and washing it (or scrubbing it in situe) there's not a lot you can do.. Diesel being a thin oil will stick to everything

Re: Diesel smells ?

I used to hate having to wash my OH's uniform and work clothes when he was working on minehunters..There was just no way for anyone to avoid getting it on them on such a small ship.It stank out the house until I did wash it.

Luckily a good long wash cycle got rid of it.So you will have to rinse it off with lots of water.

Re: Diesel smells ?

Can't be half as bad a Kerosene (jet fuel) - which has similar properties, I.e. oil based that leaves a thin film over everything. Every time I've de/refuelled a jet (no matter how careful I am) I always end up smelling like an old paraffin heater.

Sigh....................!

Re: Diesel smells ?

thanks for the advice, i've managed to get rid of the worst of it.

when i took my spare wheel out there was a little puddle in there so worse than what i though and the boot carpet was soaked so i'm gunna have to throw it away.

I dont suppose anyone knows of the best place to get boot carpets, i've had a look on ebay and they want £25, i've also put a request in find-a-part.com but i was thinking it might be easiest/cheapest to buy some plane black off-cut from a carpet warehouse type place and cut it myself...i dunno i've never had to buy carpet before....

Re: Diesel smells ?

It depends how old your car is and whether you eventually plan to sell it, or run it into the ground. Chucking an off-cut from carpetright into the boot will definitely devalue the car in the eyes of any future purchaser and also an insurance valuer, were it ever to be written off for any reason.

Re: Diesel smells ?

How about a local car breakers - they may have something suitable.
