Fruit/Veg @ Lidl
I've been trying to save a few quid every week recently and decided to buy some pears from Iceland, they were the most dry and disgusting pears ever, so if anyone knows hows the fruit quality at Lidl?

Re: Fruit/Veg @ Lidl
I'm lucky in that I can get good quality fruit and veg at the independent greengrocers in my village to supplement what I get from my garden and Asda.
However the really good supermarket for veg and fruit is Waitrose.Expensive but very good quality.

Yes there is no doubt about the quality in Waitrose but its a bit expensive for the vast majority of us.

I believe that was what I was insinuating. Anyway lots of rich pensioners round here using Waitrose.. the rest of us head to Asda,Morrisons or the Saturday Market.

dry and woody texture usually means that the pears aren't quite ripe .

Re: Fruit/Veg @ Lidl
I've only ever had a problem with Lidl spuds... sourced in the UK... they were full of black stains (too cold in storage?).

Re: Fruit/Veg @ Lidl
I've bought veg at Lidl and it seems OK. Their carrots tend to go black rather quick though. The Vine tomatoes are really good.
Black stains in the spuds might be the first stages of blight?

We've had that problem with spuds bought from just about any shop this year. Even Sains.

Re: Fruit/Veg @ Lidl
I normally get my fruit and veg from Lidl and the only issue I've ever had was a lack of availability, though (in all honesty) this applies to the more exotic to which Lidl really do excel - I've seen some things on sale I couldn't pronounce let alone recognise or know how to prepare.
I think that because Lidl (like Aldi and Netto) are based abroad and as such have a more diverse supplier base. To my mind, the continentals have a higher respect for quality than we do, Ive noticed that not many brits use my local Lidl which (sort of) speaks for itself.
Anyway, my advice is - let your eyes tell you whether there's a problem.

Re: Fruit/Veg @ Lidl
As for the original OP most fruit sold these days are classified as Ripen at home which means that not only does it have a longer shelf life but you do need to keep it in a fruit bowl (or left in the punnet) for at very least a few days before eating. Otherwise it'll be hard, tasteless and not very sweet.

In general we've found the fruit and veg at LIDL to be good quality and reasonably priced.
As for the black marks in potatoes that seems to have been a problem with King Edward's all over this year, including potatoes bought at Waitrose.
We have had quite a problem with veg purchased from Tesco, seems to be excessively chilled in storage and doesn't keep when you get it home!
