Poverty and scratchcards.

Sitting outside a shop on the phone before I went in.

A woman and her son and daughter come out (about 11 and 13) the mum gives them both a scratchcard each, and then all of them move over and start scratching them off.

they both watch mum doing hers.
mum goes back in and gets some more. daughter looks over at me and turns around and pretends to be tucking her top in and pulls her trousers down showing her whole bum. looks around back at me and just smiles.

mum comes back out and all do it again. still not won anything. they all walk past the front of my car to go, and then the mum looks at me (they all did) and says I'm gonna get some more.
the boy turns around to his sister and says if he gets £10 he's gonna get 10 of em.

mum pops her head back out the shop and calls the daughter to ask her if she's got 55p.

I really felt sorry for them spending all that money on the cards, when they look like they haven't got any.

maybe they've won before and they're addicts now?

Re: Poverty and scratchcards.

It's their money so they can spend it however they want to. What they cannot then do, though is say they haven't got enough money for something else when they're spending a lot of it on things like Scratchcards.

Re: Poverty and scratchcards.

Perhaps gambling is the main problem instead of singling out scratch cards.. I suppose though that scratch cards are readily available and give instant results but lottery probably has more players from lower incomes than the scratch cards alone.

It's probably a case of no money big dreams... instead of no money so find work

If she is addicted then it's like anything else, it's a problem but it's her own problem. Perhaps she will eventually realise that gambling is a mugs game and stop buying them.

Re: Poverty and scratchcards.

I bought a scratch card once and one £2, so I bought another 2 and won £10, then I walked away,.

Unfortunately some people cannot walk away win or lose.

Re: Poverty and scratchcards.

I know someone personally who won £100,000 on a scratch card. The sad thing is it didn't last long and now they are far worse off than before they had their win. He wished he never won the money now. Strange how things go.

Scratch cards are popular, you see all sorts buying them, and good luck to them really. I've never bought one myself, but the lotto is worse, I'm still kicking myself for having set numbers every week. But you never know, one day I'll will win it as I keep telling myself twice a week.

You see. That makes no sense to me. I can only assume the person concerned had no self-control over his spending and just blew the lot because he had the money.

She was only about 12/13 you perv. she was pretty though.

you would have liked her mum. just most of her upper teeth missing.

saves taking them out I suppose

---------- Post added at 22:31 ---------- Previous post was at 22:27 ----------

The thing about this was that you can tell that they do it all the time. for her to go back in twice and buy more, they must have a problem.

if they had money then fair enough. but looking at them you know they haven't.

I just felt sorry for them I guess.

Re: Poverty and scratchcards.

I won £50,000 last March on a scratchcard, had a fantastic time spending it and still buy scratchcards.

Re: Poverty and scratchcards.

I think its linked to social deprivation. I notice people buy more scratchcards, alcohol and cigarettes in the areas I work in, than in the area I live in. And quite frankly its apparent they can't afford any of them

I gave up wondering why people would put buying booze, cigarettes, drugs or scratchcards before providing a decent diet for themselves or their children as I see if everyday.

I suppose they're in a rut but very often can't see a way out which is very sad, but at the end of the day everyone has a choice. I hate the expression people are the way they are because of where they were brought up, I was brought up in not a very nice place to say the least yet I made a choice to do a bit better and try to move on. Some people are not capable of making that decision, they can't see a way out - or don't want to change who knows
