Question Rhubarb

Hi all,

This year I want to start growing my own rhubarb as i really like it and its hard to find in the supermarket.

i only want to grow enough to make 4-5 pies over winter, but i know that from seed to harvest it takes 2 years.

ive never grown it before so i dont know if you can purchase mature plants that will give you a harvest in the 1st year or not, basically my question here is can you?

i dont want to wait 2 years until i can enjoy my pies lol

Re: Rhubarb

you can force it and apparently its better if you force it anyway. You just need somewhere dark

http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_...#rhubarb_force

you will need plants first though still

go and see someone on an allotment and see if you can have some of there mature plant as quite often the crown can take over a small patch and will need seperating from time to time to keep it under control you could take part of the crown and plant it in your garden .The next few weeks is the ideal time to do this and you could have rhubarb pies by summer .If you want to force it then just put a big bucket over it to cut out the light

Re: Rhubarb

Hi Barewolf, if you don't find anyone to share a plant with you, and are visiting your Mum, have a mooch over to the Primrose Cottage Garden Centre they usually have a variety of rhubarb crowns in the veg and fruit section. Any plants that you find there will pay you back in loads of produce as a thank you for removing it from next to the runway.

Leave it for a little while though as transplanting it into such cold ground wont work at all well.
