Looking at eBay I found sets of 6 all of which are different sizes.
Would these be OK, or would the original 3-of-one-size-3-of-another be best?

All 6 should be different sizes. Top string should be thickest, bottom string should be thinnest. It ust looks like the 3 bottom strings are the same but they aren't.
Its a bit odd that 3 have broke so soon. Mine can last me months and that's playing punk with some pretty hefty string bending. I think either one of more of:
1. She's not playing it correctly (either hitting the strings or string bending)
2. The strings were tuned far too high
3. The strings had a battering in the shop
4. The strings were a ridiculously rubbish brand.
I think it would be a good idea when you buy the new strings to take it and her to a shop and let them string it and watch her play to make sure it isn't #1 or #2. For #4, Always buy Ernie Ball Strings. They are some of the best in the business and a great price.
Get her some Ernie Ball Super Slinkies 9-42. They are good all-rounders but good for rock music. If she wants to play blues or bluegrass or something a bit different ask the shop which Ernie Ball's they recommend.
