Car Temperature
My Peugeot 407 car temperature is going right to the top (on max) and the stop light is flashing, but randomly the temperature goes all the way down and then back to normal temperature (about 90) whilst driving and then back to max again. The car has been like this for a couple of days now.
The car also revs more when I press the accelerator at times.
What could be the problem here and what do I need to do?
Thanks

Re: Car Temperature
Temperature wise, I would check radiator water levels.
Water pump could be on its way out, checked by looking for returning water into radiator with heater switched off.
(son in law had same problem he was running his peugeot with no antifreeze in rad last cold spell!!)

Re: Car Temperature
Are the 90 to Max transitions very fast?? If yes it'll be the wiring to the thermisistor either corroded or earthing itself out causing the readings

Re: Car Temperature
I'd say it could be the stat or possibly an air lock in your cooling system, have you noticed any odd instances where your heater stops working or any gurgling noises.
I'd try squeezing the bottom hose of the radiator (when cold) to see if you can hear or feel air in the system.

Good thought as they are normally controlled by a seperate thermoswitch, so if the fan comes on when the temp goes sky high then it's probably a fault within the cooling system (pump/airbubble/thermostat/..etc..) if though the fan doesn;t come on when the temp goes sky high then it'll be a sensor problem.. Or a fault cooling fan switch (though in that case it wouldn;t go down again...)

Will it be better if I take my car to a garage and let them find the fault, or will that cost be more than say if i say to the garage (by assuming) it's the thermostat?

Re: Car Temperature
a good mechanic will diagnose the fault very quickly -if your not mechanically minded then book it in .

Air locks don't just happen it's a sealed unit, if he has one there's also an underlying problem to be sorted to.

Which is why I asked if they could hear a gurgling , which could possibly indicate a head gasket issue.

Re: Car Temperature
Bare in mind a garage will charge upwards of 50pounds an hr plus parts (local garage).
Shame you don't have access to a Haynes manual for your car (are they still in business?)
