Oak Table Restoration
Hi
I have a Solid Oak Coffee Table in my possesion, its quite big and bulky (5ftx3ft), but it has some light scratches and i want to try and restore the wood and re-stain it.
does anyone know how i would go about it?
do i sand the wood, or use paint stripper?
do i need to spray a varnish on or can you use a brush?
do i have to apply wax?
basically any advice you can offer, i want to restore the table so i can sell it. at the moment its going to end up on the skip, but its too good to throw away. Originally it cost about £400, and as you can imagine, its too expensive to throw away

Re: Oak Table Restoration
I wouldn't do too much to it if you want to sell it as you have no idea what sort of finish the prospective buyers will want. If it's solid oak then you could give it a gentle sanding to remove the light scratches but that might involve quite a lot of work, especially if there is a lot of intricate detail and/or the sanding results in a noticeable colour change in the affected areas.

Re: Oak Table Restoration
Light scratching is all part and parcel of the character of an oak table, I'd leave it as it is and just get some good wax on it..

Re: Oak Table Restoration
Fine gauge wire wool in the direction of the grain to remove all the old varnish/wax.
Then the final finish depends on what you want... and what the rest of the table is finished with. It could be French Polish so get ready for a sweaty session...

Re: Oak Table Restoration
I wouldn't touch it ,just sell it as is .If it is oak and not just a oak veneer then removing the patina of the wood would devalue it

Ive had a good look over it and its generally in good condition except a few minor marks, so im assuming i could use some kind of touch up process.
i also have a matching side table, but no idea of what price range to list these for.
ive seen solid oak coffee tables at £300 that are no where near as good as the one i have
