Car insurance costs rise by new record, says AA
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11516195
Quote:
The AA has recorded the biggest jump in the cost of car insurance since it started tracking the market, with young people bearing the brunt of the rise.Figures due to be published this week show premiums for 17 to 22-year-olds have risen by 47% in a year.
Young male drivers are paying the most, with the average of the three cheapest quotes they get being £2,457.
That is nearly double the premiums offered to young women, the motoring group said.

That is a disgusting price hike..47% in one year?Despicable!

I read that one teenager was quoted £6,000 for a Ford Fiesta

Nearly all cars now if you like can't be stolen without the keys. does that make a difference? no.
nearly all insurance companies are taking advantage of people need car insurance. does that make a difference? yes.
I heard the AA guy on the radio today trying to justify why it's so expensive to insure a car and why the need for such high prices. he sounded like he knew he was talking a load of bull. and he was blaming it on injury claims. he even said one claim can run into millions.

Do cars still get stolen? Yes. Are they more or less likely to be recovered than 10-15 years ago when anyone with a screwdriver could nick a car? Less IMO

There are plenty of companies who exist solely to try and screw money from insurance companies for minor bumps.
My dad was crashed into a few years back. No injuries, no damage to his car, moderate damage to the other drivers vehicle.
To this day he gets phonecalls and texts from lawyers asking if he wants to claim damages for the accident.
That coupled with almost every minor accident being reported and whiplash claimed is certainly responsible for a large amount of the costs of insurance.

Re: Car insurance costs rise by new record, says AA
I'm 41 and have been claim free for 19 years. I have to pay £350+ for my car.
My Brother In-law is the same age and pays £190.
I have a 55 plate Mondeo Ghia X, he has a 03 plate Ford Focus Ghia.
I'm single, he's married with 2 kids.
So I'm being discriminated for being single.

Wow I paid £1500 on insurance for my first car when I was 18. I just put in the same details as when I was 18 into a comparison website and a similar car as i had back then, the cheapest quote was £4500!

That doesn't surprise me - apparently if you have a named driver on your policy it is likely to reduce the quote, something to do with making drivers safer.
Also I imagine that your brother-in-laws car would be in a lower group which would help.
I have noticed that my car insurance shoot up this year, despite having full no claims

Pretty much every car can be stolen without the keys, with a low loader.

Slightly OT: why do we have this sudden influx of new members that have more red blobs than they have posts?

I am with LV and they seem to be the most reasonable insurer at present, but I would always recommend going through the likes of Money Supermarket or Go Compare as they tend to give the best prices.

Re: Car insurance costs rise by new record, says AA
I'm amazed with some of the quotes for younger drivers. How can they even afford to get on the road? I remember when I was 18 (a while ago ) I paid £40 third party fire and theft on an oldish 850cc Mini and that seemed expensive at the time when petrol was 35p a GALLON! (4.5 ltrs to you non imperial peeps).
Currently I'm with Churchill and paid £215 last year fully comp with protected bonus (17 years claim free) and agreed milage max of 8K/yr on a group 9 car albeit 15 years old. If it goes up much I'll do a search but I don't think I'll get it much lower.
