From Mevafishy, through Barlick to Amazingstoke, nicknames for Britain's towns and cities are legion. Now a new project seeks to create a database of what we really call where we live

Now, as part of English Language Day on Wednesday 13 October, the English Project and Ordnance Survey are launching Location Lingo, an interactive project which aims to uncover the nicknames, pet names and hate-names which people use in their daily lives for the places which are near and dear to them.
So are there any local nicknames for our members home towns?

OK remember the T&Cs apply at all times so let's try not to deliberately trip the swear filter or bypass the swear filter.

Re: Location nicknames: What do you call your home town?

Sorry for mine, but it's true. I won't call it a 'hole or anything like that, it is what people call it. Though the term is mostly used by those that live just outside or those that live in Norfolk. It's a footy thing as well, Norwich calls our team by the same name.

As for Basingstoke to be called Amazingstoke, I agree with the comment in that link about it sounds like comes from their council. Who really calls their place amazing.

Re: Location nicknames: What do you call your home town?

Auld reekie, for edinburgh, though I never call it that myself

I have found that calling it edinburgh suits it, and me
(unless when I go abroad, then it's the place where guy's wear skirts called kilts, and we drink whisky and pee in the river for the english to drink )

More than likely, I work between Grimsby and Brigg area.

Tin Town, that's a new one. By the way there is only one left I think opposite the old garage, I knew they took one apart and moved it to a museum!!

The Ferry people call my home town of Briton Ferry. Not aware of anything they refer to Swansea as apart from Swansea.
