Predominantly I use my laptop on the coffee table or a tray so suffering from lappy rash is not a problem.

I can't have my laptop on bare skin it's annoying. I usually position it so that i have a cushion on my knee but so that the fan vent is clear. Not ideal i know but i'm too lazy to sit up at a table with it

I use one of these (well similar) which goes nicely under my sofa. On top of which I put a USB power laptop fan base thingy

I got it from one of the sales books that come with the TV guide. I should say that mine can fold flat.

That was going to be my next question as I wanted someting to fold away because I wouldn't have much room when It's not in use. Thanks for the help Hom3r. Much appricated.

I used to use mine on bare legs but found I used to get little static shocks through my leg hairs 
I briefly had a Dell Inspiron 9400 and that used to do the same thing to my arm hairs.
Haven't used any laptop that way for years though mainly because I was concerned about the damage I may be doing to my laptop rather than the other way around.

I read that men shouldn't put laptop on laps, as it not only can kill laptops, but can roast his "2 veg", so they say.
Its proberly why places stop caling them Laptops and now call them Notebooks.
