Call to 'suspend' diabetes drug

Call to 'suspend' diabetes drug

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11397645

Quote:
A widely-used diabetes drug should be pulled from the market, European regulators say.
Avandia is used to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients.
It was licensed 10 years ago and more than 100,000 patients in the UK use it despite on-going concerns linking it to heart problems.
After reviewing safety data, the European Medicines Agency said the benefits no longer outweighed the risks and it should be suspended.
The drug - generic name rosiglitazone - is also used in combination with other drugs under the names Avandamet and Avaglim.
I was only recently taken of this drug so thought it a good idea to post this for any other Type 2 Diabetes patients.

I now take this Victoza (liraglutide) instead of rosiglitazone and gliclazide and I feel much better for it.

Re: Call to 'suspend' diabetes drug

hi masque

I take Byetta which i believe is similar to victoza but works in slightly different way.

oh btw advandamet is still being prescribed as i have it on my repeat presecription, even though i cant take it with Byetta, and i have told the gp, the receptionists and even the pharmacy who just take it off me wen i get my repeat.

I know this as i got it prescribed yesterday, and again chemist took it off me

More information can be found here: http://www.ema.europa.eu/ema/index.j...01ac058004d5c1

This shows the importance of long-term follow-up of new medicines.

Re: Call to 'suspend' diabetes drug

Luckily my dad is type 2, and is lucky that it is diet controlled (If only he would do as told ).

Straying off topic a bit

One thing I would suggest find out if your NHS trust does free courses in Diabetes, we did one with my dad (6 week) and it was well worth the afternoon.

It covered what it is, drugs used and our group went to the local Tesco (most of group shopped their) and read food labels to shown what is best to look for.
