My pipes are banging!
Hello everyone. Yes, I know it's been some time, but I'm back with as many tales of woe you'd like.
Finally decided that the crap Saab I bought on a whim on our favourite on-line auction site was a big bag of poo. Possibly not as big as the big bag of poo on Speedfreak's shoulder, but not far off. Luckily, but unsurprisingly, had been unsuccessful in selling lovely, but old, Golf GTi so decided to keep the Golf and take Saab to local poo-car auction where we lost a considerable amount of money. Put Golf back on the road and all is jolly, apart from the fact that it needs a new clutch cable and possibly a new clutch. Hey ho.
In the good news section of this post, we managed to replace the pump on the boiler so we have heat and hot water and it's been lovely. Now we have a new problem and our pipes are banging. It sounds like someone is upstairs with a Kango and it's a bit scary. Have tried bleeding radiators etc but it's still going on but only when the hot water is on, not when the heating is on.
Does anyone have any suggestions which don't involve the words "boiler" "needs" "replacing"?
I think my house might explode. And, strangely, I'd be much happier if it didn't. Not to mention much more alive...

you have air bubbles stuck in your pipes ,get the plumber out who changed your pump and get him to blead the system as it was most likely a result of changing the pump

Re: My pipes are banging!
If it only happens with hot water and not with the central heating then it sounds like the problem is coming down from your hot water tank.
I've got the same problem at the moment. Using both the hot or cold water tanks make a right racket.

Re: My pipes are banging!
Gotta love air in the pipes... until it hits the pump and your pump airlocks and runs dry.....

Weird feeling of deja vu...
I think it might have something to do with the spider that was under my bed last week. My colleague who works at the spider museum in his spare time (why? WHY??) told me it must have been a female (bleurch - don't even want to think about what she was up to!) but SHE WAS THE SIZE OF A SHETLAND PONY!! I bet she's dislodged something on her perambulation around the house.
Anyone know how to keep them out of my house??

No. Unless Horlicks counts. That's fairly strong stuff.

Re: My pipes are banging!
If you get the pipes to bang in time to music it could be fun..... Like a sort of added bass effect around your house.
Seriously though, it sounds to me there is trapped air in the pipes and the radiators need bleeding.
If you call someone out make sure they check your boiler pressure too and that nothing such as a leak is causing it to fluctuate.

Re: My pipes are banging!
The old school method is to hook a pipe from the hot tap to the cold at the point furthest from the stopcock for the house. turn on the hot tap first then the cold, the pressure from the cold forces any air in the hot water system back to the heater tank, I would only do this if you have a hot water tank as I don't know what the consequences would be on a tankless system.

Or just go to a mixer tap, cover tap with hand and open the hot and cold, cold will force up through the hw side but if I read Sarah's post right its not when running the hot water but when its heating the water so that wont do anything. Sorry I didnt reply to the pm Sarah I thought you were taking the mick Im off to bed with some pies now so I'll get back to you tomorrow, sounds like marty is on the right track though
