No mobile...
I got asked today if someone can call me... my answer was that I wasn't near a phone.. (that'll shock a few of you android/iphone owners!!!)
Does anyone else here not use a mobile anymore?? I had one for over 10 years from 1996, used it constantly in my IT job but after I retired I found that I was paying £25 a month for what amounted to £2 worth of calls.. So I took the step of not bothering with one.. (wasn;t just for the costs reason but also the fact that one of my ex's got abusive on the mobile)
Although we have a business fixed line in the workshop we hardly don't even use that anymore...
How do we communicate.. well the only mobile number I have is a SMS to email service and I use that for domain contact details, the rest is via email/msn and if we're on event then via radio (in fact we use the radios round the village and even to about 30 miles radius..
Anyone else find that their mobile and for that matter fixed lines went the way of the dodo.. and if so why??

Re: No mobile...
Fixed line has to a point..only have it because it is part of deal for broadband..and useful if I have problem..phone 150 etc
I have always used PAYG..never got a contract..then again..I'm never one for long conversations..except when the latest gf wants me to phone her..sigh..but..that only lasts until I train her ...I should try to be a professional trainer..wonder if there is money in it

Re: No mobile...
The longest £10 credit has lasted on my mobie, was almost 2 years!! Now I'm finding that I have top top it up every 6 months or so - really must cut back on usuage I prefer face to face contact, land line but mostly e-mail.

Re: No mobile...
I'd much rather only have my mobile and drop my landline. If I wasn't on adsl I'd probably do it too.

Re: No mobile...
Why would anyone pay £25 a month !
I got my phone cheap off ebay, and use a payg sim.
If I had to choose, id drop the landline.

Re: No mobile...
I had about £8 on my PAYG Orange "Dolphin" phone before my holiday in July I added two lots of £10 to get the free 100MB web acces to access my emails while on holiday I came back and I had £27 on the phone I just checked and I have £10 left, so no point me going on a contract.

Gawd I remember my first orange contract in 1996 had only 15 minutes inclusive with a free Nokia 5.1 which I still have in the attic somewhere

Re: No mobile...
I would love to ditch my PAYG mobile, a top-up £10 lasts me at least a couple of years and I forget it needs charging so have resorted to having to make a note in my diary.
I only have the dang thing with me to reassure my husband and son I can contact them in an emergency though I do use the camera quite often.

Re: No mobile...
I used to carry it round for the GPS function and camera.. but camera is now a small Kodak zi6 with 3mp and 720HD @ 60fps and GPS wasn't accurate enough so ended up with a Garmin (I'm not talking about satnavs but pure GPS)

Re: No mobile...
My mobile is for safety when driving because of breakdown and for work to contact me..I can make a £50 top last up to anything from between 4-6 months.PAYG every time.I barely use my VM landline either.

Re: No mobile...
I've always used e-mail a lot as you have an audit trail of who said what. With the tech stuff I do I need to send diagrams, drawings and code, no realistic other way to do it plus a mail gives you time to formulate the correct answer rather than just winging it during a call.
I do have a landline with an answerphone/fax unit on it. I have got a mobile recently as one client insisted they wanted to be able to get me at will. Had that over 3 months now and guess what? They've never called it. D'oh!
However it's got a nice camera, screen and lots of features. Doubles up as a USB data stick as well. Still has £8.98 of the original £10 PAYG it came with. Those calls were trying to retrieve a message from the voice mail made tricky by the phone locking the touch screen during a call and the voice mail not waiting for me to unlock it to press the correct option.

Re: No mobile...
Before mobiles I lived happily without one, now If I forget it I cannot get it out of my mind.
I got my first phone (well 2) when my sister was working in the next town and she had to drive down some dark counrty lanes alone.
I had been made redundant and got a new job straight away, and bought her a PAYG (one2one) but then thought what if she cannot get us at home so I bought 2.
When I gave it to her she burst into tears. But I only have one sister and her then fiancee (now hubby) couldn't aford it that month) and thought what the hell its only money.

Re: No mobile...
I use 'Friends and Family' on voda, my wife ends up paying about £5 every 6 months. I pay £20 a month but that's with friends and family, 600 mins, unlimited texts, £5 towards 500mb of data which I'd only use about 50mb a month which I hate paying for, but if I cancel it, I'd probably miss it. (I use it for gprs lock on and messenger when out and out to the wife and as wifi for the iTouch).
I'd love to cancel the landline but as it's been said it's part of the package, and it does help when calling 0845 type of numbers.
I don't think I'd buy an expensive mobile, my Nokia 5800 meets all my needs, I mainly use it to call, text and the sat nav, anything else I use the iTouch. I'd rather have a mobile I can put in my pocket and not worry about.
