Comics/Graphic Novels
(If this topic is in the wrong place please move it )
So I have just finished reading the Scott Pilgrim books (which is the first comic I have read since the Beano) and I am itching for more so I was wondering if anyone on here read comics/graphic novels?
Does any suggestions for a which comic/graphic novel would be best for a newbie to try next?
Thanks

Re: Comics/Graphic Novels
I've moved it to "Lifestyle", as that's where the book threads seem to live (while "Entertainment" tends to be Music/TV/Movies).
Any particular kind of style or genre?
I'm not so sure about "newbie" recommendations. I originally just jumped into Batman & the X-Men, and then started picking up other stuff.
I used to buy several comics regularly, but now tend to just buy the odd graphic novel or trade paperback.
Although trying to get into something such as Batman or X-Men regularly can be a pain, with the mass of titles and the confusing continuity, there are some very good graphic novels though.
Some classic Batman ones would be... Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Killing Joke (in that order).
Preacher was an excellent series, and has been collected in trade paperback form.
I've heard very good things about The Walking Dead. It's an ongoing zombie apocalypse comic which gets collected every so often.
I'll try and think of some one-off things...

Re: Comics/Graphic Novels
Jonathan Ross is a BIG fan on these, IIRC he's writing his own book.
The last I read was The Eagle (2nd time round)

Re: Comics/Graphic Novels
Judge Dredd megazines and JLA are my favorites, (though in the 70's I used to pinch my brothers Warlord and Victor comics (they were bloody expensive imported into SA)
Currently I'm going through all the Year One stuff like JLA, Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Superman...etc..

Re: Comics/Graphic Novels
You might want to take a look at (translated) Japanese manga. Some of the spin offs from TV animé series are available from Amazon. I have an interest in the Gundam series so one I would suggest is "Blind Target" Only to get the best from this it is necessary to familiarise yourself with the main characters and genre
Amazon link
There's also the Gundam Seed story as a complete set of 5. These are in the traditional Japanese format (translated) in that the book spine is on the righthand side and you read the panels from RH top to LH bottom.
The first few chapters are here so you can see if it's something you'd be interested in.

Re: Comics/Graphic Novels
I always found non-animated manga to be a bit dull to be honest.. Without the fast action the stories lack a lot of content..

Very true, though the manga can show parts of the story that couldn't be put in the animé due to age restrictions. (Such as the space cadets trying to get a glimpse of a curvy Flay Allster as she's washing. )
There's also the background manga that sets the characters past that wasn't part of the original series.

Re: Comics/Graphic Novels
One of my all time favourite books Magician is now in graphic form Magicians Apprentice Vol 1 & 2 - Raymond E. Fiest
Also looks like the rest of the series are being turned into graphic novels as well.

The ones I have seem to read fairly normally so I guess the English has been vetted by a native reader. They were published in the states by Viz Graphic Novels.
Quite a few on-line here: http://www.mangafox.com/
