It's gobble warming
OK so it's in the Sun so it's OFFICIAL
Quote:
BRITS are eating food more than 400 TIMES hotter than we dared in the 1960s.
Some sauces we try now even carry WARNINGS.
Our tastebuds over the past 50 years have got more used to fiery grub, research found.
Sales of mouth-numbing food are up 20 per cent in the past year alone, and we eat more ultra-hot dishes than any country in Europe.

Full story
I like a good hot curry or chilli but it's interesting how the nations perception of "hot" has changed over the last few decades. But I also like loads of flavours bursting out as well as heat.
1960 Mild curry 1,920 Scovilles, 1980 Vindaloo curry 10,500 Scovilles, 1990 Thai Jungle curry 50,000 Scovilles and today's "Dave's Ghost Pepper sauce" at 800,000 Scovilles.

Re: It's gobble warming
And Dave's 6am variety is 16,000,000 scovilles. It costs a small fortune and you need to sign a waiver when you buy it that you understand it's a food additive NOT a sauce.
And don't forget that the hottest chilli in the world is the Dorset Naga, our very own contribution to pushing the boundaries in food.

Re: It's gobble warming
Not sure if it daves, but I read that you can get a curry paste/sauce that you have to sign a legal disclaimer before they will sell it to you.

Re: It's gobble warming
It always makes me fume (no pun intended) when I buy a sauce/meal marked "extra hot" then find I could feed it to my chilli-hating missus knowing it is mild as heck.
If I ask for "extra hot" in restauarants I always seem to get that "He's only trying to look macho" look from the waiters... until I munch on a chilli THEY would not dare eat!
That didn't work in a Thai restaurant once though... they decided to fulfil my wishes and served me with a full-strength Thai meal... it melted my innards!
But it was fun!

Re: It's gobble warming
The chilli is only one flavour in a curry,it really shouldn't drown out the rest of the spices in a curry.
Cumin, coriander, turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon, lemon grass, etc all have individual flavours but are more delicate along side some chillis. Add to much or too hot a chilli and you ruin the meal IMHO.

Re: It's gobble warming
Dave's Insanity Sauce gets used a lot in my food, I must admit.

agreed - it's easy to over-do the heat.

Re: It's gobble warming
Spontaneous combustion works well on burgers as an alternative to ketchup.
