Shell petrol station (possible scam)

Popped into a Shell petrol station earlier. I picked up the pump as normal and waited for it to reset to 0.00 as you do. as soon as I pressed the trigger it shot right up to £8.03. I thought to myself there's no way I put that in so I put the thing back on and went in the shop.

I asked him if there was a problem with the pump. I was expecting him to argue with me about me having took that much petrol and just trying to pull a fast one but he didn't. he was quite nervous about it. I told him what had happened and he said it's not registering anything and to do it again.

is it possible for him to set an amount on the pump from where he is?
it was actually registering £14 when I first got there, so the £8.03 wasn't the amount from the last use.

If you believe it's a problem contact your local trading standards office and let them know that it went to £8 instead of zero. They should check it out and report back to you

No, it was there along with how many litres too.
it was on £14 when I pulled up. took it off the pump and waited for it to go to zero. pressed the trigger and it went straight to £8.03 along with so many litres.

There is nothing a cashier/attendant can do to alter the pump display. The control system is relativity dumb, the only thing you can change is the pump price, and that only with a key. It sounds to me like a mechanical fault in the flow meter in the pump. It's been a while since I managed a service station but I don't think much has changed.

Gary ,which pump did you use ,was it petrol or diesel ? if diesel there is ususally a fast pump on most forecourts for lorries .the diesel comes through twice as fast ,you can do £8 in about 4 seconds at the one i use .Did you get £8 worth of fuel ? look at the fuel gauge

I only own petrols. I know about the diesel pumps. it come up that fast that I'm not even sure I pressed the trigger.
