Fruit trees in the garden

This is the first year where fruit has appeared on the trees that we planted in our garden about 5 years ago.

One tree is cherry and the other is a pear.

the cherries look almost done, but i tasted one and its a little bit sour still, i checked the pears and they look a little too small at the moment.

when is the best time of year to pick the pears and cherries?

That depends on the weather and the variety AFAIK.

And some cherries stay sour.

Well done on still having cherries - This is the first year that I managed to keep our cherry tree free of infection and had good looking fruit - that was until the magpies got to them

Your cherries should be ready now, as July is their season. As for the pears, I'd hang back until they've had a little more rain and they're not to tough when squeezed.

Yes, there are many varieties of cherry and some are best used for cooking as they don't get sweet enough for most people to eat raw without additional sweetening. We've picked almost 10kg of cherries from our small Morello tree and there's still about 1/3 of the crop left.

Talking of fruit, has anyone got a lemon tree?
I was hoping to get one (that hopefully doesnt get too big) and bring it inside in the winter.

We bought dwarf lemon and orange trees earlier this year and they're doing quite nicely in their pots with small fruits now starting to form. Apparently the varieties we have should be hardy all year donw here in the south but they came supplied with fleece covers to give frost protection for the colder months. We got ours from the Ideal World TV shopping channel for about £15each IIRC but I don't know if they're available right now.

Yep - happy to. Admittedly we don't buy much from them but we've never had any problems and the fruit trees we got are excellent.
