Thumbs down Meeting with the Jobcentre tomorrow

Right im going to get straight into this and say that im not looking forward to tomorrows meeting. But then who likes going to the jobcentre? Not many I bet. Basically I was given the sack in Oct 08 and have since then been claiming JSA. Now I was under the impression that i would only be claiming for a couple of months. WRONG!!!! .

Since this time I have been on Gateway to Work, which is a 2 week course and got my CV and covering letters typed up/re done. Been on a 3 month Option Course which I got some work experience in Tesco, and dont get me wrong I enjoyed doing it. Anyway after this came back to the job centre for 6 months still looking for work couldn't find any.

I have felt for sometime that I just go in there sign a declaration to say i've turned up and off home I go. Now shouldn't the job centre be helping me find a job? instead they are doing squat.

It seems to me that because I have a visual impairment and can't drive because of my sight problem, they basically say "oh because you have a disability we dont care about you" Is this really how they should treat people instead of trying to help them get back into work?

It's not you, they are equally hopeless with everyone. Have been as long as I've known. I've signed on twice in my life and never had a sniff of a job through the job centre. I've always found employment again myself.

If you didn't mind the work at Tesco, why not call up your local supermarkets and ask if any have vancancies?

Re: Meeting with the Jobcentre tomorrow

Just pester them, ask for a dedicated meeting with them.

They are awful, and seem not to care with most people.

Have you tried going into your local stores, or even the store you did your work experience in and asking about any vacancies?

If your visual impairment is that bad then shouldn't you be claiming ESA instead?

My visual impairment is only bad to the point where I cannot drive, I can read normal print and do other things like many other people. I suppose its a case of just keep applying and pestering employers till I can get somewhere

Really there are a couple of issues here... Firstly, the job centre are utterly useless...And although I've never signed on, I have tried using them to find jobs, and found them to be completely pointless.

Next there is your sight issue, which limits the radius in which you can actually travel to work.

I don't know what kind of work you are looking for, but for me, Speculative letters didn't do anything, with no reply to about 95% of the 100+ I sent out when I was out of work.

Have you checked www.jobs.nhs.uk for jobs in your local NHS trust or your local Council? (I'm just trying to think of places which usually have jobs of one form or another going).

Re: Meeting with the Jobcentre tomorrow

What ever happened to the training courses available to those long term unemployed which would give them an NVQ and work experience? Had a few working at the last company and although they got dole +10+travel over £5 a week they ended up with some good experience and those we couldn't keep on most went into jobs supplied by our clients.

Re: Meeting with the Jobcentre tomorrow

I had my 6 month review today, I only found out yesterday.

I was not happy as I had to cancel something. (Hospital trip, Not me).

The woman I spoke to was very nice, she went through things with me and I showed here what I do to look for work, my CV, and things I take to an interview.

She went through the jobs in her system, one came up which was out of my town and 50% less than I was on, she said "that won't pay for your fuel" and moved on to the next one.

So I have a few more jobs to apply for then, I'm off on holiday.
