Lightbulb How to permanently kill grass

Hi All

Been looking on the net read various things, i want to know how to permanently kill grass if possible.

Some sites say vinegar some say salt others Jayes fluid, any done this themselves before?

More than happy to use chemicals as will be gravelling the area next year when i save some pennies.

Re: How to permanently kill grass

cover it with something to stop light getting to it and it dies.

Thing is you are going to need to skim the top off anyway before you gravel it also you are going to need to use weed proof liner otherwise something is gonna grow through the gravel eventually anyway

You could also enlist the help of your local neighborhood moggies, as I've found that grass dies off very nice with cat's urine.

Incidentally, have you had a look at a product called Lazy Grass/lawn. I've several friends who have had this (artificial grass) alternative put down to replace their ailing lawns and it's looks the dogs danglers when it's laid and no maintenance or mowing required .

I'm thinking of having it done myself.

Just a thought!

Re: How to permanently kill grass

Just let me at it.

My lack of greenfingers will soon kill it off. My attempts to improve and fertilise my garden using simple standard lawn fertiliser have worked against me. Even reseeding don't work

Re: How to permanently kill grass

We made a gravel garden a few years back as we had an area of grass that was a proverbial pain in the derrière as it always needed treatment to stop it turning into a Moss Garden.

Although it looked horrendous we just covered the whole area in black bin bags split open and held down with tent pegs. It took a couple of months but it did work and we then exchanged the black plastic for Weed Control Fabric and topped that off with gravel.

We didn't bother digging in the dead grass/moss and have had no failures with any of the plants we used to avoid the large cat litter tray look and we have been really pleased with how effective the Fabric has been. Here's a picture of a small section.

Re: How to permanently kill grass

If you ever want to use that ground again beware of many of these ideas... just use a weedkiller with glyphospate in it... it takes out the roots.

Glyphosate is my favourite, it has taken a few summers to kill my Japanese Knotweed problem but all other previous attempts failed. It certainly killed off the grass, and it has not attempted to re-grow.

Re: How to permanently kill grass

The best was Ammonium Sulphamate which even destroys Marestails/Horsetails, but is now banned by the EU 'cos Irishmen did not want to kill dogs...

Quote:
The pesticides review by the European Union led to based herbicides containing ammonium sulfamate becoming unlicensed, and therefore effectively banned, from 2008.[4] This situation arose as the Irish Rapporteur refused to review the data supplied unless it contained details of animal testing on dogs. As there was already substantial animal data within the package supplied the data pack holder felt further tests without substantiation would cause unnecessary animal suffering. Its licence was not withdrawn on grounds of safety of efficacy.

Its availability and use as a compost accelerator is unaffected by the EU's pesticide legislation.

Very interesting, I have the sudden need to accelerate my compost.

This may seem a bit extreme.
