Dental sedation
Well went to the dentist today and had a few x-rays. Got told I need some teeth taken out and as I am so scared of needles I would be sedated.
I know I need a needle to be sedated but to get around this they will numb part of my hand where the needle goes in.
I will be then sedated.
Whats it like? Has anyone else ever had it? Can you still tell the dentist stuff?
One thing I am worried about is what if I am sedated and out of it but the anaesthetic in my gum has not worked properly. Will I still be able to tell the dentist?
I am shaking like a very small nun at a penguin shoot.
Please any advice or experiences to help me.
Thank you

Re: Dental sedation
I use to be a dentist, chances are you will be wide awake and feel all the pain but will be unable to speak out
p.s Im sure you will be fine If you want my advice just shut your eyes and take the needle in the gum, it will be over before you know it and it hardly hurts. Cant they rub a cream on the gum first to numb it slightly before the needle? Oh and obviously, Im no dentist

sorry, I hate needles to but Ive had that many jabbed in to me lately Ive got used to the feeling I just cant watch.
My sensible answer would be just shut your eyes and let them do it in the gum, I dont like that feeling of being sedated. Good luck and sorry for the wind up, it wont be anywhere near as bad as you imagine and will be done in a second, I make a point of never looking at the needles

Thats what i did, the only thing i hated was when he was scrapping the niddle on the bone .
But to Central, the dentist could try numbing the surface of your mouth before putting the niddle in(as speedfreak said lol), that should lesson the pain.
DON'T WORRY, it will be over before you know it.

you cant mention scraping bones and then say dont worry!
But seriously, it wont be that bad the thing with dentists and needles is that most people fear it but its always over quickly. Saying that if you are having a few teeth out Id consider sedation myself, even with a needle in the gum last time I had a tooth out it hurt like hell, depends on your pain threshold

Re: Dental sedation
I've had no experience of being sedated for dentistry - but have had more local anaesthetic injections than I can remember - and I've never had one that 'didn't work' - whether for normal fillings, root canal fillings, apisectomy or extractions - all were pain free during the procedure.

Re: Dental sedation
I've been sedated about 6 or 7 times during dental work. You'll have to take someone with you that can get you back home safely, otherwise you'll probably be found walking on the hard shoulder of the nearest motorway!
When I've been sedated, it's usually an injection to the arm or the back of the hand, then once you're in marshmallow land, they will numb your gums to remove the teeth.
It's a great feeling and I would recommend it to anyone who has a phobia of having needles in the mouth.
You're still kind of awake, but totally relaxed and you wont feel a thing. The dentist can still ask you to open wide etc, but you have no recollection of it. I was told that what they use to sedate people, was also used (in the past) as a truth drug.
After you've had a good sleep and the sedative has worn off, you'll find it difficult to remember anything about it.
Don't worry, once they give you the sedative, you wont be worrying about a thing, trust me.

Re: Dental sedation
My wife was sedated for dental surgery a few years ago, she felt no pain at all.
She was virtualy asleep through all of it.
I had a laugh afterwards though, because she was like a drunk for the rest of the day

Re: Dental sedation
You could always go in for a dental hypnotist. There are a few around who use hypnotic anaesthesia for patients.
It's a zen type thing, they are helping you to transcend dental medication.

Re: Dental sedation
It depends where the teeth are IMO that you are having removed. For bottom teeth its worse as the needle goes in the soft tissue on the inside part of the jaw and that can hurt a bit (not normally the needle itself but the actual feeling of the anesthetic) the top ones usually go on the outside of the gum which for me has less feeling and is fine.
I wouldn't go for sedation personally even though I HATE needles, just because it takes far longer under sedation.
If its just extractions, then its needles, and 30seconds per tooth, or the alternative is being "out of it" for hours feeling like you've blacked out.
I have to say - in my experience it also depends on who your dentist is. My old dentist was a plonker and even pulled a tooth out of mine after leaving me waiting too long after the anesthetic and it had nearly worn off.
My current dentist is the best I've ever had.

Only if you goto hospital for your treatment. Local Dentists don't have licenses to use it any longer AFAIK as its classed as General Anesthetic.
