Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
... or do you have experience of living in either?
If so, I could do with your thoughts on places to live in/around the two.
I was initially investigating places in Cheltenham, but I'm thinking that's going to be pricey - so now I'm looking at Gloucester as well.
Ideally I need to identify somewhere with easy travel links (bus is fine, road ok) into Cheltenham. Obviously if the place is close enough to the centre of Cheltenham then walking's an option, but (as I said) I think price will be a killer there.
Any thoughts would be good, rental budget is around the £600 mark, ideally would be looking to find somewhere with at least 2 beds. A garden isn't an issue, so could be a flat, but parking is an absolute necessity.
If anybody could help me by identifying areas/postal codes that I could start looking at that would be really great - thanks

Re: Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
Hi Rob,
My sister used to rent a flat in Cheltnham in the Montpellier area.
She said it was quite expensive around there but she enjoyed it as it was all within walking distance of the parks, bars, town, and restaurants.
If there is anything in particular you need to know, I can ask her for you.

Halcyon, thanks - really just looking to get ideas on where to avoid as much as anything
If it wasn't too long ago (and if she doesn't mind) an idea of bills etc would be useful

GCHQ, the government intelligence and listening establishment.
Cheltenham's not a good place for the wearers of tin foil hats.

Re: Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
Just had a quick text from my sister.
She says that most places are going to be expensive in Cheltnham as she was quite near the city centre. Rent will never be lower than £500 for a 1 bedroom flat.
Her council tax was £75 per month.
She also says that parking was also very difficult with not many on street parking areas where she lived.

Was she living on her own? If so, that figure will include a 25% discount for there only being one person liable to pay council tax living at the address.

Re: Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
Thanks Halcyon (thank your Sister for me too please ).
Jon T, aware of that and already built into the calculations. I'm allowing £100 ish for council tax so that should be plenty.

Re: Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
Traffic can be a bit of a nightmare but now worse than other major urban areas - BUT you will have to content with real bad traffic on race days...

Re: Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
Boss says Gloucester is much cheaper than Cheltenham but still has all the good entertainment etc and has good public transport links to Cheltenham (train & bus). The traffic is bad going through Gloucester and Cheltenham but between the two is an 8 mile dual carriageway.
Try having a look on Google street view for the areas that interest you. You might spot the odd abandoned car (rough area) or obvious leafy suburb (expensive area).

Re: Do you live in Cheltenham or Gloucester?
Thanks guys.
Looked at Gloucester as an alternative, but figured that it would probably be worth putting the money I'd then have to spend on transport towards rental instead - this then saves me having to fight through the traffic.
I'd like to be in Cheltenham if possible, I'd also like to be able to walk to work (might help me shed a few pounds ).

You need to look for somewhere Gloucester side of Cheltenham then, as where you will be working is just off the first roundabout from Gloucester as you reach Cheltenham.
You could try cycling One boss regularly does a 25 mile + round trip on his bike.
