Re: need a good digital recorder dictation device? for podcasts recordings...

To record? Most models of mobile phone have voice notes these days, but if you want pro quality audio, look to anything that can record 44100 Hz 16bit with a hookup for an external mic, that will give you CD quality. Check the battery life, are the batteries rechargeable or can you fit normal AA batteries. Check the recording format - AAC, MP3, WAV, etc.

As for editing - Audacity (Windows / Linux / Mac) is about as good as you get. It's also free.

I suppose a more pertinent question is - what budget are you looking at with regards the audio recorder?

Re: need a good digital recorder dictation device? for podcasts recordings...

And I am assuming you want reasonably high sound quality, the ability to use an external microphone so you don't get wind noise if recording outside?

I might be sounding a bit naive here, but wouldn't a decent MP3 do the same thing? Can you not download straight your hard drive on your PC?

yes, you can, however most MP3 players aren't equipped for an external mic. Most only have an onboard mic and the audio quality isn't the best. If it's something you want to use for podcasting with any reasonable quality, the flexibility of the external input is a big bonus.

I have just re-read the OP and I presume he wants to create a podcast, I thought he wanted to record a podcast from the internet. Oops!

Re: need a good digital recorder dictation device? for podcasts recordings...

We just picked up an Olympus DS40 dictaphone for £50 on eBay, it's a nice little stereo unit with the stereo head being removable giving you a 3.5mm Stereo input jack for electret microphones. also got 1/2 Gb memory giving 8+ hours in high quality mode. We're gonna use it for sound recording as extra tracks to a video...

I was going to suggest one of those. When I was at university it was very useful for recording lectures. Has a rather good stereo microphone with it.

The microphone supplied is a bit limited in it's frequency range but perfectly suitable for speech. Take a peek at http://www.diycamera.com/audio/audioindex.htm for a great report with mods

Re: need a good digital recorder dictation device? for podcasts recordings...

OH WOW... just got the unit delivered.. Fantastic little device, great menu system and software and even doubles as an MP3 player (though the DS50 has double the memory)

For the money it's a well built unit with good specs

Like I said, it's a goody.

When I got mine there was bundled with it an external Sony microphone and a holder for the dictaphone. Both work very well.
