Just got my first P60, how do I go about claiming back tax?

Hello all,

I have just received my first P60 (desite having several jobs, I never got one for those because either my boss was commiting tax fraud (my first job) or I wasn't there in April of another).

This means I have ~3 years of tax to claim back, but how do I go about doing this now I have my P60? It only shows the tax from my current job, but I assume the tax office will have records of my last job(s)?

Do I just phone them up and ask or is there some form to fill in and send off?

Any advice welcome

Thanks.

Andy

Given I earned less than £5k in the last tax year, I believe I should be entitled to some money back, and better to ask than be ignorant eh?

only asking

given your past tax history from your past employer i would contact your local tax office and get them to check usually any refund is paid automatically

I've been told refunds are NEVER paid automatically, you have to ask for it.

So how do I go about claiming it? Is it a form or a phone call? I have no idea which tax office I use at the moment since I recently moved. Is it the one my employer uses?

They may not automatically pay a refund, but they do automatically register the fact that you have overpaid. Unless you tell them otherwise, they 'repay' the overpayment by adjusting your tax code so that you pay less tax in the coming year. If you want a nice big cheque for the full amount, you have to instruct them to do that.

If you're on JSA, you aren't making any tax payments, so it's a bit hard for the HMRC to repay you by reducing them. Under those circumstances I would expect them to simply send you the cheque.

Re: Just got my first P60, how do I go about claiming back tax?

Despite the common misconception, the HMRC are not out to fleece people and do assess tax repayment automatically.
The only issue this year is that there have been several errors in the calculations and some charges have not always been correct - which is why it's always best to check the calculations and that the correct code has been applied.

Taxation is averaged out over the year - so if you are taxed too much in month 1 and 2, then the tax office will correct your coding with your employer to allow for the over payment and it will be averaged out over the remaining months.

You've got two options.
You could call your tax office - the number would appear on the P60 and also the notice of tax coding your were sent during the year showing how much tax you were supposed to be paying.
You could register online with HMRC and complete an online tax form which automatically calculates any additional payment or refunds due.

You could work, not earn more than your allowance, lose your job and then you'd get a rebate.
JSA is taxable income.

When I left uni, I tried to claim JSA, and recieved a letter saying I was entitled to £0 JSA and if I thought it was too much, I should contact them.
By the time that came through, I'd got a job so forgot about it until I got my P60 a few months later.
I was due about £600 tax, my colleagues got their rebates, I didn't. So I called the tax office, and they mentioned they had record of me recieving JSA, but not of how much.
So I faxed them the letter, and when they stopped laughing they sent me my rebate.

I know. I paid higher rate tax for the first 3 months of the last tax year and then spent the rest of it out of work and claiming JSA. The tax refund I am now due is, shall we say, substantial ...

I won't go into detail but if your self employed, don't do your tax return online, yes it's easy, yes it's quick, and yes, you'll miss out on monies owed, get an accountant, pay to earn ( back )
