Problems with Clutch
Anyone know what the problem might be?
When my car is switched off the clutch moves up and down freely. When the car is on and I put it into first or reverse then the clutch stays stuck down. I have to switch the car off as it isn't driveable.
The car is a Megane.

Re: Problems with Clutch
It could be the spring has broken (if fitted on the Megane), or the clutch has gone and need replacing.

Re: Problems with Clutch
If it was a spring would that not mean it would stay down all the time, not just when put in gear?

Re: Problems with Clutch
It sounds like an hydraulic failure in the clutch servo ???

Re: Problems with Clutch
If it's a hydraulic clutch check the fluid level. it might be shared with the brake reservoir or have it's own. any fluid on the floor?

it was a guess - but to continue the thought is there a clutch master cylinder you can check is topped up?
- edit to reluctantly admit Gary L was quicker to that possibility

Re: Problems with Clutch
How would I know if it was a hydraulic clutch? Can't see any fluid on the ground. Too dark now to check the fluid levels. Don't have any warning lights on, was serviced 6 thousand miles ago.

I think you'd be better off looking in a Renault forum for advice. I'd say the slave cylinder has gone and I don't know whether that's inside the gearbox or outside. worst case is that you'll need a new clutch and cylinder.

Re: Problems with Clutch
The Megane has a cable clutch.
My advice, call an exorcist, it sounds haunted to me.

Re: Problems with Clutch
Forgot about this thread, well its still in the garage, get it back tomorrow. The problem was with the slave cylinder this had to be repaced. Also the clutch plate had to be replaced as well as the fulid had leaked onto this.

Re: Problems with Clutch
I would have said that it sounds like the clutch spring bearing needs replacing.. it's the bearing that slides back and forth within the clutch selector forks.. If the bearing itself has gone the rotating engine will put rotational force on the whole bearing module instead of just the inside of the module and cause it to stick. When the engine is stopped there's no rotational force so it doesn't stick
