M&S anti-cellulite knicker claims 'misleading'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8650443.stm

Quote:
Marks and Spencer is making unproven claims about anti-cellulite knickers, consumer group Which? has said.
Okaaaaay.

Quote:
The £29.50 Anti-Cellulite Firm Control Waist and Thigh Clincher pants contain vitamin E, aloe vera and caffeine.
Eh?

Quote:
The label says they are "independently proven to reduce visible signs of cellulite", but experts told Which? any tight pants would have the same effect.
I needed a good laugh this morning. Until I realised that science teaching in this country has actually nose dived in it's efficiency if this is actually what buyers actually believe will happen.

It's a bit like when GMTV do a health story about the amount of fat in foods.
They'll show one product which says it's low fat (and it adheres to the rules to make that claim) and another product which has lower fat but doesn't mention it as though the first product is trying to con people, rather than the second product just having useless marketting behind it.

Thing is Xaccers is that maybe my science based colleagues should be teaching science in such a way that anyone is going to challenge stupid claims about useless products..rather than swallow all the garbage they spout because obviously the advertising standards agencies are just not up to the job..

I sit open mouthed about the claims made for expensive face creams like Olay or hair products Like Pantenne on the TV..Such BS.

Are you actually supposed to wear these or should they be marinated in hot water for a breakfast beverage?
