Statins?
Just been put on statins for high cholesterol. Doc said that 2yr ago I was 6.9, last year through hard work (a little) I got it down to 5.3. Now its gone up to 6.3 and as I suffer from hypertension (medicated) she has put me on them.
Anyone else on simvastatin 40mg?

Re: Statins?
My mum has recently found out that she has high colesterol, though looking at her she is the last person you would think has it. Her doctor is avoiding putting her on them and has recommended Vitamin E and a few others things. Not the info you were looking for but perhaps the Vitamin E could help also?

Re: Statins?
Oh yes and I got a strange dry cough which anti biotics would not shift, so got sent for an x-ray and they found nothing, so I have told my doctor that I am stopping them, he disagreed but my cough is virtually gone after 5 weeks of coughing.
Nothing else had changed with my medication so it does look like this stuff is the cause.
He wants to try it again once the cough has gone but I need my voice in my job and the coughing gets really bad.
Of course you may be perfectly ok with it but if you get a cough!!!!!!!!

Re: Statins?
After having my first heart attack at 38 I was put on 30mg simvastatin.
25years later they upped it to 40, guess I was lucky they had the medication available to save my life.

Re: Statins?
My husband is on these after having an arterial bypass in his left leg in January. He doesn't have high cholesterol as such BUT after years of smoking he does have a danger of further blocked arteries and the loss of his leg/s so he is on these as a precaution.

I have had a chest X-ray no issues so must be the drug and usually its the coating, so unless the is another brand I will probably not go back on them.

Statins are a group of drugs that are commonly used to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood. They include atorvastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, and simvastatin. They each have different brand names.

Re: Statins?
Thanks all for the replies.
I'm gonna give them a go but if I develope anything that is not normal for me then I will stop, go back and either get another type of statin or a lower dose. Both my in-laws were\are on statins with no ill effects so here's hoping I dont suffer any I didnt realise till I read up a bit more that the medicine is actually a toxin that has the effect of ridding the body of LDL's
Thanks for pointing out that link Mr LM

Re: Statins?
My younger bro had a heart attack, so I was told I would be at risk too and so put on statins... some think all people over a certain age would benefit from them... especially if the meds are taken in the evening.
Dry cough too... though I do smoke.

I do not smoke and this is the only change in my medication and appears to fit.

Re: Statins?
I have come out in a rash on my rh side "torso" about the size of a saucer, feels itchy & sore just took an antihistamine and I wont be taking any more of those bloody things again. I am going to go back to how I got my LDL levels down before and that was Seven Seas extra high strengh capsuals 2 a day. Worked then it will hopefully work again.

Re: Statins?
I've been taking the 40mg dose for 2 years, It's best to take them of a night before you go to bed. You must NOT have grapefruit whilst on statins, it can be dangerous.
The only side affects I have, is a dry mouth.
It's a good idea for all adults to have their cholesterol checked. I know of 2 people that are related, they're both fit and never eat junk food, they've always eaten well, yet their levels are sky high. It can be hereditary, so even if you think you're ok, it's better to be safe than sorry. After all, high cholesterol is a silent killer!
