So stressed with work
(Rant mode on)
My manager must be a Doctor in training. Last year in August I had Swine Flu. Informed work who then told me if I have it for longer then 3 days then I dont have it and I should get back into work. I then got hassled every day to see if i was coming back. Even though I told them I would be taking atleast 5 days off oon the advice I had.
Then back in Feb of this yeah I broke my small finger. I went to the hospital to get it x-rayed and banadaged up. After I left I told work the nurse had told me to rest it for a few days to give it time to start healing. Of course my manager then said in these words "Stop being such a pussy and come into work" I went back the next day and to be honest I was in agony.
I really hate that job and I do want to make a complaint but I dont want the hassle of him treating me like crap if I do.
I am stuck

Re: So stressed with work
This is bullying. You shouldn't put up with it. The more you take it, the worse it will get.
I suggest you speak with someone. The local CAB might be a good place to start.

Re: So stressed with work
I'm not sure if your boss isn't right (sorry).
A broken finger isn't usually incapacitating enough to keep you off work.......depending on the work
The pain should be controlled with medication. And a few days off to "get the healing started" is neither here nor there.....
I work with my hands and carried on working even though I had a broken 5th metacarpal (barroom fracture) on my dominant hand.......but maby I'm odd that way

You masochist...
A good boss can make all the difference to a job. When I first started a previous job, I did it well. I had some problems because a few of the members of staff I worked with submitted late or incorrect figures to me, which I had to spend time chasing. They did this regularly. But, while the job was stressful, I coped because the boss was aware of the problems I was having and did help as much as he could.
Then, he left. I got on well with his replacement, and she seemed like an efficient sort of a woman, so I looked forward to working under her. For a few months, we got on OK. Then, one day, she started shouting at me because the figures I was *recieving* were wrong. This was a problem I had made her aware of, and I also made her aware of the fact I was powerless to do anything apart from ask the people concerned to submit the correct figures, and I had done this repeatedly..
One day, the situation came to a head. I was doing some photocopying. My boss followed me into the photocopying room, started a row and eventually slapped me. Unfortunately, she did not notice that one of the company directors (who, incidentally, I was fairly friendly with) was standing behind her. The director invited me back to her office, and made sure I was OK. She also asked if I wish to press charges (I didn't), and she sent me back to my office with orders not to discuss what had happened.
A few minutes later, my boss got a phone call. Apparently, she was asked to submit her resignation and was told if she didn't, the company would fire her and press charges. She did, and the director waived any requirement to work out notice, so she left that day.
@ Central: If you feel you are being bullied (and it sounds like you are), then I would suggest you discuss the matter with your boss's boss. In my case, I didn't, and I suspect my boss's boss would have done nothing but talk to my boss (the director in question was about 3 levels of management above my boss's boss).
However, if there is bullying occuring, the company need to know. If they know, they may be able to do something about it. If they don't, they won't do anything about it.

Just point them towards the NHS UK official swine flu pages where it states
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Pandemi...spx#backtowork

When should I go back to school or work?
You can go back to school or work when you are feeling well and are no longer infectious. Adults are most infectious soon after they develop symptoms and remain infectious while their symptoms continue, which is usually for up to five days.

quite agree , this bosses attitude stinks ,and i would tell him straight to his face ,but that's me not everyone is the same ,the op may not deal with confrontation well ,plenty of people don't and more to the point you shouldn't have to at work .A lot depends on the type and size of the company ,is there a HR department you can go to and voice your concernes or is it just a small family type of company ,these type of companies do tend to get away with murder sometimes regarding worker rights and general treatment of their staff

Re: So stressed with work
Maybe the comment was said in a flippant way, not in the way some have said on here as a bullying way.
I am old school and do not follow the trend that we all have to be treated with kid gloves at the work place.
I have broken my little finger three times now, and worked through it each time.
My work is manual as well, not desk bound.
Yes it bloody well hurt, but hey ho if I do not work I do not get paid (self employed)
I do have the grin and bear it attitude though to most things in life.

It is difficult to assess these kind of things in a forum - my current job doesn't pay for days off sick & more than 5 days off a year affects my bonus.
- last year I broke my collar bone during a work organised sports evening - I didn't realise it was broken at the time & only took one day off, then put up with it, even though driving was, literally, a pain...
- on one hand I shouldn't have had to suffer the pain, on the other hand I got paid full whack, including the bonus, but less the day off - and I should point out SSP does not reflect my normal daily rate ..
- my choice, ultimately, I have a lumpy collar bone, now, but no further disability ...

I agree. But according to the OP:

So, in both cases medical advice was to stay at home, but the manager seemed to think he knew better. He hassled Central every day, and used inappropriate language. Given this evidence, I don't see how it can be described as anything but bullying.
Of course, there may be more to the story than we are seeing, which is another reason for Central to speak to someone who is used to dealing with this sort of thing - a solicitor in the CAB would ask the right questions, and the report would be on file.

However the advice was correct in the first case but probably incorrect in the second.......
You can stay off work because you have an injury, by all means.......but that injury might not actually be sufficient to stop you working

Yes, that is where some people get confused. I broke 3 toes last summer which meant i couldn't drive for a week or so. Because my job is primarily sat at a pc with an ear to my phone, i had the choice to somehow make my way in (lift etc) or work from home as there was no issue with me doing the work.
The only circumstances I take time off work is when i physically am unable to do my job, i only wish others' weren't so quick to phone in sick
@ Central, this isn't aimed at you btw, for what its worth I think your boss got it wrong about the swine flu but could have been a bit more sensitive about your finger
