Tow Bars
Hi,
How much does it cost to have a tow bar fitted?
We're not going to tow anything hefty - all I want it for is to put a bike carrier on it to carry a couple of bikes.
Car is a Ford Mondeo.

Re: Tow Bars
You can get cycle carriers that don't require a tow bar...

You could go to your local Ford/Gates garage. The will do one for the model you have.
Or you could go to halfords/argos and get a generic carrier

Re: Tow Bars
I don't like the strap on carriers - I don't think they are that safe and are a pain to keep strapping on bikes for transport.
I'd like a proper cycle carrier where it sits on the tow bar and you clip the cycles to them.

Re: Tow Bars
Trouble is though Marty, those prices don't include fitting and wiring.
OP, I certainly wouldn't recommend attempting to fit them yourself, unless you know exactly what you are doing. Don't forget to allow for other costs, such as a towing board etc.
You should really expect to pay about one hundred and fifty, to two hundred pounds, for just the tow bar and ball, fitted.

the price includes the wiring and some are designed to fit yourself especialy the lightweight ones for cycle carriers ,wich is what the op wants it for

Re: Tow Bars
Yes, you are right about the wiring kits (I need to look a little closer in future ), but my advice about fitting still stands. The weight is irrelevant, if you don't know exactly what you are doing. I have seen many a mishap caused by poorly fitted towbars. The problem is that it is not the lead car that is at risk, it's what is behind them that is in danger.

Re: Tow Bars
I'm glad you guys are talking about the electrics for a towing board (if you're towing a trailer) or a lighting board (if you're hanging cycles on a rack). Too many cars have their rear lights (illegally) obscured by a rack full of bikes.

Re: Tow Bars
Indeed, many accidents have been caused by inconsiderate jerks, thinking that the law doesn't apply to them.
