Blue and Red Balls!
Today we took delivery of a new Hotpoint Aqualtis (AQ9D69UV) washing machine. In the little pack that came with it were a couple of sturdy plastic balls. One is red and the other is blue, they have some slits in them, but I can't find anything in the manual that came with it as to what they are for. Anyone else got this machine or a similar one and can shed some light on their use?

Could it be they are designed to hold washing tablets? If you use the tablets rather than than powder, then apparently they work better if they are in the drum with the washing, rather than in the drawer.

On further examination, they do unscrew. Inside each ball is a blue sponge! The mystery deepens!

Aha, trawling through the spare parts bit of the Hotpoint site, I've some across 2 spare parts:
BALL SCENT ASSY BLUE
BALL SCENT ASSY RED
So they are something to do with adding a scent.
