Personally, anything by Vauxhall within that budget, nice, reliable, comfortable motors

Re: With £2500 to spend on a car.....
Is there any other criteria? Number of doors, expected annual mileage etc. ?

Re: With £2500 to spend on a car.....
I started the car hunt with a list of things a mile long that I wanted from the car, now I'm getting to the point where I'll buy just about anything.
Originally I wanted.
Diesel, less than 80k miles, FSH (if possible), reliable, not too expensive to insure.
I've looked at:
Peugeot 307 2.0HDi
Focus
Fiat Stilo
Astra
Those are the ones that if I could find one at the right price, in the right condition, I'd buy it tomorrow. Unfortunately I'm struggling to find one within budget and that isn't a complete shed (the last 307 I looked at had been clocked backwards by at least 40k miles!!!!!).
Hence I'm after other ideas on what I could look for.
Ignore the criteria above, I'm accepting just aboyt all suggestions at the moment

Re: With £2500 to spend on a car.....
You should be able to get a pretty decent Mondeo or Focus for £2500.
Have you thought about maybe a Toyota Corolla or Avensis?
Japanese cars are reliable if sometimes not the greatest to look at...

Couple more Xantias, either either another Activa and maybe a V6, or even have an Activa converted to a V6 and maybe an XM.

My 2.5k would go on a Focus, if I had a little more then would be something German.

Focus for sure. Lovely car to drive, practical, cheap to run, parts available everywhere.

Re: With £2500 to spend on a car.....
Diesels are good for fuel economy but can be a nightmare to maintain unless you do any significant mileage as if you run into problems with the engine, can cost a bomb to fix, that's my take on it anyway
