young offenders ,do we flog 'em or love 'em
sky link
Quote:
A new scheme asking for ideas on how to punish young offenders has been forced to reject many suggestions, including floggings and the stocks.
The Government asked members of the public in the North West to suggest jobs that youngsters could be ordered to carry out as part of their punishment.
In six weeks, 131 ideas were put forward including locking the youngsters in the stocks and pelting them with oranges.
|
is this more "lazy government" or the government trying to find out what we ,the public ,want to do about young offenders .
I think it is an ok idea but a better idea would be to stop young people offending in the first place
what are other peoples thoughts on ways to punish young offenders ?
here's a link for the accepted ideas http://www.yjb.gov.uk/en-gb/yjs/MakingGood/NorthWest/

Castration, off with the goolies
Never heard of anyone committing a crime with that as a deterrent .
Though, if that happened, you might see people reaching for the family jewels

If the government choose a path to go down, they'll be criticised by another party or the public as being too soft or too hard.
So let the public decide and if it's a disaster we only have ourselves to blame.
As to what can be done to punish them I'm in favour of making them do their community service or other chosen punishment in bright orange jumpsuits with placards declaring their crimes.

Re: young offenders ,do we flog 'em or love 'em
my thoughts are we have almost a whole generation of parents who are rubbish at the job and don't give a dam what their offspring are doing ,we need to educate parents imo , then maybe the kids will start to turn out better ,sadly this still leaves us with a lot of uncontrollable louts who think society owes them something ,we don't -if they cant play by the rules then punish them hard till they break - its not hard to instill values into your kids there are on or two good books on how a society should behave ,or you just treat others as you would expect them to treat you its not hard to be respectful and keep your hands off other peoples belongings .

Re: young offenders ,do we flog 'em or love 'em
I raised all 4 of my children with good manners, taught them to be respectful, don't take what isn't yours and if you want something, earn it amongst lots of other values.
My 16 year old is currently the very proud owner of an electronic tag, restricted to home between 6pm and 6am.
Me? I'm mortified and angry at her that she has one but because she does have one, I must be doing a lousy job!

i agree with that Papa ,
do you think that we have gone too far with individual rights ,regarding parenting ,do the rights of a parent to bring up children as they see fit with no real consequence outweigh the rights of society as a whole to dictate how children should be raised ?

Chaingang them and then bring them miles and miles and miles away where there are big huge rocks and have them break them and bring the parents out for the fun of it as well and they can help there little darlings to break the rocks.

the fact that your mortified says you care ,and no doubt your giving her a hard time there's always a few that fall through the net ,but as long as we [parents ]keep hammering away at them we may just win in the end , a couple of my brothers have been in prison - my mum invented strict- but these days there quite decent people ,there not perfect but who is

No you're not , your post is probably typical of thousands of parents who have done their best to raise children to a good standard .I am a firm believer from my own experience that despite the best of upbringing some children can still go down the wrong route ,it's what happens next that will determine how she behaves in future

the kids /teens down my street used to think they had rights [ie you cant touch me i'll have the law on you] ,but when you actually belt one of the little gits local plod just don't take their word for it ,and they realise sometimes there are consequences [painful ones ]
i don't think any one has the right to bring up their kids to break society's rules and then hide behind the law - but im no angel if some one annoys me enough i smack em ,but only as a last resort .
