Self Storage

Has anyone had any experience with using a self storage company, in particular Big Yellow Self Storage as this is our nearest one? We're looking to put our flat on the market in March and want to put some clutter into storage over the selling period so that the place looks a bit better. Anybody used a self storage and know how much they charge? A lot of them don't seem to have any prices on their site and instead want to give you quotes.

Re: Self Storage

If your only looking to store lower value items (clutter) then i would suggest contacting your local council/housing assoiatation for the cost of renting a garage from them, these tend to bee about half the price of self storage companys for the same size of storage, of cause theres 2 down sides to this option.
1)secority, naturally with self storage things are stored in a locked werehouse as appose to a garage on the street (hense the low value items)
2) size flexability, self storage charges you baised on the size box you use so if you've only got a small amount to store it would proberlly bee cheaper to use a storage company, but if you can fill half (or more) of a garage then the garage option is proberlly cheeper.

When i moved house i rented a garage AND had 2 boxes in storage (the 2 boxes together were about the same sq footage as the garage) each box cost slightly more then the garage (£12 pw). i kept the low value items in the garage and more expensive stuff in storage. 3 years later i still have the garage but everything is now out of the self storage place.

(btw it was a local company i used for the storage so i dont know what a nationalcompany would charge)

Re: Self Storage

I'm not sure I have enough to fill a garage, or whether my local council even has any. I don't know if they even have any council houses around here. I'd also prefer that the stuff I'm storing is kept dry as it will probably include DVDs, CDs, PC bits & pieces, toys, clothes etc.

Re: Self Storage

I had one for a while (think i was about 15 sq ft) - and it wasn't cheap.

Something like £15 quid a week.
