Re: Tough Call
Wasn't really a choice. He could save his wife to attempt in vain to save his son.

Gary Wilson, a senior fire officer, said the water was dark and murky and that firefighters had struggled in vain to reach the car. "We tried everything but to no avail," he said.

As sad as this is, he clearly made the right decision. All three could have drowned, it would have been a fruitless act to attempt to rescue the boy. I know it's very easy to say that sitting here, but from an objective perspective, it was the right thing to have done.

Re: Tough Call
It's something that everyone in the armed forces is taught..
If you come under fire, or even have an incident you save who you know you can definately save and then go back for the rest if there's reasonable hope..
If he had tried to save his son then both his son and wife might be dead now..

Re: Tough Call
No matter that it was the right decision it must still be difficult for him to to come to terms with the loss of his son but knowing that the firefighters had also been unable to reach his son at the time must relieve some of the self imposed guilt this poor, poor man must feel.

Re: Tough Call
Reminds me of that awful choice one poor British guy had to make during the Boxing day sunarmi, he could only save one of his children and his arms had to reach out to just one child.
Another sad tale, poor family.
