Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
News story originally from the BBC website
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8320043.stm
£5.99 = All you can eat. (£7.99 in the evenings)
Reminds me of a certain country to the west which has epidemic levels of obesity
Although I must admit, I would be tempted by such a restaurant, hehe.

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
In the US, most of these chains have been renamed 'All you care to eat' - probably to avoid the suggestion by litigants that they were encouraged to over eat.
Personally, I enjoy the occasional visit to our local Chinese buffet.

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The local Chinese AYCE were great, despite being run by Russians... but now they're pricing themselves out of the market.

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
I have been to a Taybarns which is the subject of the first post and found it to be surprisingly ok and extremely busy, mainly down to the diverse menu and a single price which also includes free soft drinks, you pay on entry and find a table then queue for whatever takes your fancy.

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
I'm tempted to check one of these restaurants out - there is one fairly local to me but I'd never heard of it before. Not really for the AYCE but more for the fairly diverse menu (my other half is a picky eater).

What's the food actually like? I remember in the states it was hit-and-miss with some of the dryest, blandest rubbish you would ever eat. It might as well have been paper.
What's the point if the food tastes rubbish. It's almost asking for obesity if your eating regardless of the taste and instead for the challenge of stuffing yourself stupid as cheaply as possible.

Its cookd fresh in plain site and it is not out long enough to go dry and rubbery, people always vote with their feet.
It is quite good even if the price is low.

Many year ago I had a 2 week holiday in Florida, we spent every morning (6:30-7am) in a all you can eat place (fried, cereal, fruit), we stuffed ourselves silly an this lasted use to about 10pm that night, with just a Big Mac Stacy Jones Dog burger for a snack.
If you like it, eats it, stuff anybody how tells you otherwise.

I went to California as a child - was about 9 / 10 - and they asked me "6 or 12 Eggs" I replied, "one please" they looked shocked as if i've sworn at them.

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
We have a very good chinese restaurant nearby where there is an All You Can Eat for £12/head for adults. Unlike normal buffets this is an eat all you can eat from the menu. You can carry on ordering dishes from the menu.
What I like is that they have a wastage penalty, so that you are charged for anything that you don't eat. This prevents people going crazy and ordering everything off the menu. It also ensures that people dont waste food simply because its only £12.

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
I've been to Taybarns once or twice and it's not that bad (except being full of noisy kids & chavs).
My only faults were that there is not a great deal for vegetarians to eat and that a few items tasted "rubbery" after being under those lamps for a long time, other than that it was worth the money.
Still wonder why they are making a big deal out of this since we have had AYCE for years

Re: Rise of the all-you-can-eat restaurant
There's a Chinese AYCE just up the road, £3.50. I've heard that the corner displaying the healthy food, is empty most of the time.
