Motorbike to Car ?
Hi, I've had my motorbike about 5 years now, but had a close call with a car the other day (not my fault) and decided that it's time that i took some driving lessons and bought myself a car. Anyway does anyone know if 5 years no claims on a bike can be transferred to a car to make my car insurance cheaper ? If so, what insurance companies let you do it ?

Re: Motorbike to Car ?
No you start at Zero due to the fact that you have never driven, but your age should help with regards the cost.

Re: Motorbike to Car ?
As already said the motorcycle NCB does not transfer onto cars, I've currently got 8 years on the bike but only 3 on the car.
Just a word on the car lessons, just remember no filtering through and the fact that you've ridden a bike means that you more road sense than 90% of other car drivers

Quite right as I was a Motorcyclist first and a Car driver second and passed my Car Driving test first time as I was so much more aware of other vehicles than someone who has only driven in an enclosed tin box.

Now that is an interesting prospect, but when you do pass shop around anyway as your age will benefit you.

That would only be true if the decision is taken to ditch the bike completely... If the OP plans on having the bike as well, then NCB needs building up for the car separately.

Re: Motorbike to Car ?
i was a keen motorcyclist in my youth, but a nasty accident which left me hospitalised for 2 months took the shine off them for me (but never really lost the love of motorbikes).
when i got out of hospital i immediately started driving lessons, passed my test first time (smug grin) and until recently hadn't ridden a bike for twenty years.
most of the friends i've grown up with, all had that same love of bikes...but never had serious accidents to put them off, and quite a few got into the motocross scene. I tried one of thier bikes on a track near cardiff just over a year ago... and wow i wish i'd tried getting back on a bike years ago, as it is though, as much as i'd liked to have a bike that i could ride on the roads, i opted for a moto x (about 10 mths ago) and enjoy every single second of being on it.
apologies for reminiscing, but my point is that however careful you want to be on a bike, it only takes one careless driver (even if its only carelessness for a second out of thier usual safe and thoughtfull driving) a motorcyclist will almost always come off worse.
If you've still got that interest for bikes, why not consider off road. (its still dangerous though, but your not gonna get hit by any cars)

Re: Motorbike to Car ?
I was the other way around - I have a protected no-claims bonus on the car, and started to use a moped. The no claims started at zero for the bike, but driving experience did count towards the reduction of premium on the bike.
My advice - don't just automatically do your first year's insurance online, but go through a broker and see what they have to offer given your circumstances.
Logically, I can see that you should get some credit for the years on the bike.

Re: Motorbike to Car ?
I've had bikes since leaving school, but went without for a few years. Then 5 years ago i bought myself another bike and with the insurance being so cheap, i didn't bother telling them about riding before and just started a fresh. Anyway it was at a roundabout the other day that made me think i need a cage around me. A car pulled out onto the roundabout in front of me and i had to slam on the brakes. The front end of my bike started to slide and i was heading for the bonnet of the car, but just managed to regain control and swerve by it. As i looked up at the car driver, i could see him waving his hands and mouthing sorry. It hasn't totally put me off bikes because i'm still going to work on one, but as soon as i pass my car test, i think i'll be selling the bike and going to work in a car. I wont be getting as wet going to work either.
