Hard to find houshold products.

I'm sometimes amazed at the products that are easy to find in the supermarkets one week but suddenly seem to go out of fashion even though there is a market for them.

I've two products that I'm finding it hard to find.

One is gravy browning and the other is peanut oil..I sort of understand why they might not be as popular in regards to peanut allergy and that not many people know how to make gravy from scratch these days but I still want to buy them.

So anyone know where to find these things?

Also is anyone else finding it hard to locate certain ingredients or household products? If so tell us and maybe the CF knowledge base maybe able to help.

Re: Hard to find houshold products.

Coss and Blackwell Gravy Browning can be bought on the net.

http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/tesco...ing_150ml.html

and it looks as though both Tesco and Sainsbury's still stock it.

Re: Hard to find houshold products.

You should be able to pick up peanut oil at a chinese or asian supermarket if you have one nearby.

Simplest way: You add a little water or stock to the residue left in the pan after frying meat, then cook it down.

Simplest way: You add a little water or stock to the residue left in the pan after frying meat, then cook it down.
...and a bit of flour or cornflour to thicken.

And a little cornflour if it still needs thickening. Best to make a paste to stop it going lumpy.

Dammit, beaten to the post..

Well that's a puzzler...You would have thought that the huuuuge 24 hour Asda ten minutes away would have them but I'm just not able to find any.Loads of crap gravy granules, powders, ready made crap gravy but no gravy browning.

Re: Hard to find houshold products.

Might be out of stock, last time I wanted something as simple as lime juice I searched 4 stores before I found it

You can always use slow cooked caramalised onions to darken up gravy..

Sainsbury's also have both products (just different brands)

Not checked tesco's as you have to register first

Re: Hard to find houshold products.

Well I'd rather not have to rely on the post so I'll make a particular point of asking at the Asda front desk if they have none in the next time I'm there..But even the Co-op haven't got any..I thought they at least would have some.
