Being 18, what will 3 points mean in terms of cost for my insurance policy?
A few weeks back I was caught doing 48MPH in a 40 zone, and a letter's just dropped through the door with 3 points attached. At the moment I'm paying around about £2000 a year for my insurance on a Vauxhall Astra diesel, but I'm too scared to even bother using comparison sites as they've given me false readings in the past. Roughly, does anyone have any idea by what amount my insurance will rise?
Also, would it be worth appealing against the points, since I do have a valid (in my eyes) reason to have been doing that speed. I feel cheated.

Impossible to say - different insurance companies use different criteria. But it won't be pleasant.

It's always worth a try although I'd advise against posting your reason on here - the righteous amongst us will crucify you regardless.

How about getting a quote from Churchill without points and another with the points, but tbh I think you will be scuppered
I'm sure Google will show up one or more site with advice on whether to challenge the ticket - was it a fixed or mobile camera? However, it would probably have to be a VERY good reason, ie not late for work.

Different insurance companies have different policies on this.
You must let them know straight away though.
Some may put a new high load on your next renewal, but it will not increase your current yearly premium.
If when you renew, your load is too extreme, you may be best going to a broker and get them to look at the best deal for yourself.

Have you accepted the penalty?
If not you can take it to court and put your case forward to the magistrate.

What would the "valid" reason be?

If you look at the back of magazines like Max Power you'll see companies specialising in young and endorsed drivers. They'll probably hit you less than a mainstream company would.

As Russ has said, it's probably best if I don't open myself up to debate. I'm not saying I condone speeding, just that I had a reason to be doing it.

That's what I was going to ask, if it does as Russ says, open it up for debate then that's the whole point of starting the thread in the first place!
Half the information is useless..

There's already an ongoing thread about speeding.

You was a police officer in pursuit of a car with no tax?
Medical emergency is a good one. if you genuinely believe you have good reason to have been speeding, then we want to hear it.
We might want to use it if it's any good

Re: Being 18, what will 3 points mean in terms of cost for my insurance policy?
I agree, please supply the "valid reason" for speeding, so we can advise. 3 points dosen't usually make much difference, but does depend on the company. It may be more relevant with 18 year olds. I do know that if you get 6 points within a certain time of passing your test (2 years I think), then you will have to retake your test.

Re: Being 18, what will 3 points mean in terms of cost for my insurance policy?
I think people are being more 'curious' than anything else regarding the reason for an appeal. It doesn't make any difference, the court will decide unless we have any legal professionals on-site?
It's up to the OP to decide but personally I wouldn't give the details. I'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of 'holier than thou' replies and more about how dangerous it is to speed, then moving on to how police can get away with it whenever they want etc but we already have a thread for that sort of thing.
