p60 form - claming back tax? how do i know if i am owed any?

hi guys

i hope you can help.
i was speaking to a colleague at work about tax issues, and they told me that if you are owed any tax all you have to do is send your p60 form to the tax office and they will look at it and refund any extra tax i paid during the financial year...is this true?

i have my p60 form for last year and was wondering if this is actually the case...
can anyone advise?

thanks

Best thing to do is ring the DWP as they can tell you exactly what you owe or are owed back with regard to tax. If you're completely unsure, go to Citizens Advice.

As a rule of thumb, if you paid any tax by default and you earned less than your tax code indicates (example 603L equates to around £6030 you can earn tax-free) then you're entitled to claim it back. I know I need to do that at some point since I was taxed whilst working 2 weeks at NTU and earnt far less than £6k that financial year.

Not sure if you can just send your P60 in, as I think they would need more information where you think the error is.

Depends what sort of allowences and deductions you have, if you have standard tax cide that chances are there are no mistakes uless you have changed jobs or something like that.

Where do you think a mistake may have been made.

If you are employed, then your PAYE employer, will have delt with your tax - however, if you are self employed and or a director - you will need to fill in the annual return and you should of registered as self employed.

If you are employed and tax is owed, it will show on your payslip. The same as a credit.
