any DIY experts?
I've removed a fireplace and want to put a new one in its place.
See the attached pic, is there anything I can buy to "fill" the gaps (I'm assuming a big tub of polyfilla won't do the job) or will I need to get a plasterer in to do it?

Re: any DIY experts?
I suspect you're going to get best results from getting a plasterer in, your only other option would be some of the ready-mixed plaster and a trowel and have a go at doing it yourself.

Re: any DIY experts?
You should be able to splodge some roughing plaster on that as a first layer then take your time with the finishing layer(s)

Re: any DIY experts?
There's a new product aimed at bods who want to cover previously artexed surfaces... supposed to be good, but I'd put rough plaster on first to just require a thin skim coat to smooth.

Re: any DIY experts?
if you use plaster coving adhesive( buy it in powder form) it will be ready to work within an hour. Build it up in a couple of layers and it does sand down. Used to use it to fill quite large holes when decorating houses/rooms but needed to be done quickly

Re: any DIY experts?
If you intend to EVER use it with real fire, you'd best remove the new surround and plaster all the space before refitting the new surround...

Re: any DIY experts?
If you do plaster (don't know if you've done it before) don't be afraid to let the finishing coat set SLIGHTLY before you trowel it over (with a wet trowel) you'll normally get a better finish depending on your technique!
(And is there such thing as a DIY expert, we all like to think we are! )

Never profess to being an 'expert' at anything.....
An 'ex' is a has-been, and a 'spurt' is a drip under pressure

Re: any DIY experts?
Make sure everything is damp before you start. Then apply Thistle Bonding Coat to build up to just below surrounding plaster work. Let it dry thoroughly (days!) and then rub off any bumps that are too high. Then apply Thistle Plaster Finish to taste.
Good luck!

Give it ago I did and now I'm a dab hand at it. Remember don't go at it heavy handed take your time and keep looking at your work, when you put the bottom layer on work from the bottom to the top, same with the skimming bottom to top.
