the youth of today
Feral youths: How a generation of violent, illiterate young men are living outside the boundaries of civilised society
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/ar...d-society.html
What forces have put boys like this in charge of our streets? And how are we to deal with them?

"Every now and then, they shrugged up their hoodies to make themselves look more threatening. 'Everyone who bumps into us says sorry,' boasted Tuggy Tug."
lol - yeah - it's called being polite and civil! something that is obviously very alien to him!

Re: the youth of today
Caveat, please - prefix with "some of a" generation.
My 18 year old, and his wide and varied circle of friends and acquaintances, do not exhibit these behaviours.
There is a need for worrying about some of this generation, but let's not tar them all with the same brush, please.

He's either at school, home doing schoolwork/watching carp TV/browsing teh intraweeb, practicing/playing rugby, preparing for/undertaking Duke of Edinburgh stuff, working part-time in a local restaurant, or at a friend's house "chillin", or one night a week going to the pub/club - he doesn't have any spare time to hang about the 'hood being a Menace2Society

Rarely have I seen such a completely ill-informed piece of tripe masquerading as a serious newspaper article.

So I take it you're well informed in what goes on in these inner cities?

Re: the youth of today
So would you ask a gang to pose for the camera (would they want to), or play safe and use a model? So are you saying the problems don't exist?

I live in the inner-city and work in education so I would imagine I'm better informed than this Daily Mail journalist, who is apparently just pushing a scare story peppered with made-up "statistics".

And yet there are 'gangs' of kids on street corners intimidating passers by and damaging property.
I have found that these youth tend to have a 'pack mentality' in so much as when you see them alone they are usually 'harmless' and even (in some cases) quite polite however, when in groups of 4 or more they seem (as a pack) to have a complete shift change.
I am sure when I was younger (a very long time ago) we had a similar thing the big difference today is the lack of consequences. If I had come home and informed my parents that a police officer had 'clipped me around the ear' my Mother would have given me another one on the premise I must have been 'up to no good' to deserve the first punishment. The biggest threat a police officer had 'back in the day' was to take me home!!!! Since there is now no corporal punishment (especially in schools) The cushion the establishment had for failing parents has now gone. So we now have a generation where some kids that don't understand about consequences. I know there were some abuses of the corporal punishment system but on the whole I believe that having this helped to control classes and allowed a system that encouraged learning and as I said helped the children of failing parents to understand boundaries. For some reason when I was 13 I would never have dreamed have damaging a bus shelter or mugging anyone. </RANT>

Re: the youth of today
Thank you for that three year old article......
Here is a more up to date article, re knife crime in Leeds
Quote:

An estimated 20,000 people have completed the Leeds programme

That's a lot of so-called "feral youths", imho. I am not denying that there is youth crime and threatening behaviour, but not the amount hyped by the Daily Mail/Sun/Star etc, which vilifies our youth by raising fear and anxiety about them (not that they only do it to the youths, mind you).
