18,000 drivers had illegal fines - Oops!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/m...er/8262904.stm
More than 18,000 fines handed to motorists caught driving in bus lanes in Manchester were illegal, the local authority has admitted.
The drivers were all caught out by cameras between October 2006 and May 2007 - before they were approved for use in bus lanes.
Manchester City Council believed the cameras could be retrospectively certified - but lawyers ruled it out.

Let's not forget they were driving illegally in bus lanes.

If i chose to use a bus, to cut emissions effectively and get from Point A to Point B, with many other people why should i have to sit behind your 'gas guzzling' car, taking up so much space for the one person in it?
Works both ways.
EDIT: On Topic: I hope they get some form of refund, however they did still break the law... Perhaps a 50% refund only?

I take it you've never been on a bus between 0745 and 0900 or 1630 to 1800 most days. They aren't exactly empty then.
And yes lets all be happy that people broke the law but got away with it thanks to a technicality, or is it that traffic laws don't really count as actual laws?

Exactly. All the bus lanes I know of in MK are only active uring those times meaning outside of those times anyone can use them.
Course that doesn't stop people not reading signs and doing 30-40mph in the outside lane of a 50mph zone because they don't know they can use the bus lane.
Probably the same people who insist on doing 40mph everywhere because they don't know that most of the grid roads are either 60mph or 70mph.

i havent been on a buss since i got a job at 16 and bought a moped
im 53 now and drive a saloon car which costs quite a lot in road fund license ,i would just like what i pay for, ie use of the road. all of it ,and what makes buss users so important that they need there own lane ?..

You don't pay to use all the road at all.
Do you drive on the hard shoulder too?

i have indeed used the hard shoulder[when breaking down ]
are there any hard shoulders in central manchester ?
it doesent say selected lanes only on my road fund license that is why i want the full use of the highways .

Not sure, i don't drive or even visit Manchester
I think you pay for the upkeep of all public roads, as do the bus companies.
Who is responsible for putting in or designating bus lanes? Local councils or?

Re: 18,000 drivers had illegal fines - Oops!
what worries me is all the empty buses running around in off peak hours with only one or two passengers ,how green is that monster of an engine that is just transporting the odd user around.
does any one know the cubic capacity of a bus engine ? and mpg/emission figures.

It doesn't say any lanes on your road fund licence, so your logic, imho, is faulty.

And that has what to do with bus lanes, which are bus lanes usually only during peak hours (as previously stated), and the buses are mostly full (thus being a more efficient use of the road)?
