Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

Hello all,

A friend and I are trying to fit cruise control to his car (2006 ford Ka), and we can't find the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor), does anyone know in detail where it is located, and if possible the colour of the wires coming from it? A picture/diagram would help. We've spent all day googling and testing all the wires we can find to no avail.

Thanks all,

Andy

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

Have you tried posting on the Ford Owners Club Forum or contacting any one from it? I've also had a quick google and found nothing of use.

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

A Ford KA is a basic car, I'd be surprised if it even had one.

Try phoning your local Ford dealership, I'm sure they would help.

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

It does have one, since his 03 reg Ka did. The speedo is digitally controlled, so it must have one in this case, or it would be a cable.

I'll tell him to go on the ford owners club.

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

Have you looked on top of the gearbox?
The KA didn't change between 1997 - 2008 so should be located in the same place as his previous model if transfering from one to another.

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

Yes, but we can't see it. The 03 engine is the endura, the 06 is duratec, so there are differences. We spent 4 hours yesterday trying to locate wiring for it, and the sensor itself.

Can you not pick the feed up from behind the instrument cluster?

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

We explored that option, but we couldn't locate any wire with the speed output. We considered it could be a data signal rather than a voltage change like the other car was.

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

If it's ABS then you might find that the same sensor is used for both purposes..

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

We thought of that too and that was our next course of testing when we get chance. We thought we broke the ABS yesterday when the light came on. It turned out that it was just because we had one wheel off the ground for testing the speed, and it thought the sensor on the other wheel was broken

Even very basic cars these days use high end technology as it's so cheap,
widely available and a well documented standard.

The most likely place would be a wheel speed sensor and that signal being put onto the CAN bus. Have google for it.

All the speed sensors i've encountered are on the gearbox, usually around the area of the differential, near the driveshafts.

Re: Vehicle speed sensor 2006 ford Ka, where is it?

Don't quote me on this but I think there's a pulse wire at the back of the radio which is also your speed sensor. When I was on the Taxis we used to fit the Taxi meters which showed what speed you were doing and distance / price of journey, we could only link the speed to a pulse wire at the back of the radio.
