My friend travels Ryanair every week and takes his laptop bag and a small holdall with his clothes in with no trouble.
AFAIK you are allowed to take toiletries but only in 50ml bottles. Superdrug, Tesco etc sell travel size bottles which is much better than having your full size stuff taken away

Re: ryanair baggage question - hand luggage?
From the horses mouth..
CHECKED (HOLD) BAGGAGE:
"The checked baggage allowance is 15kg per person (no infant allowance)
Each passenger is permitted to check in up to 3 bags with a MAXIMUM combined weight of 15kgs (subject to the payment of the applicable checked baggage fees). No pooling or sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even within a party travelling on the same reservation. Any passenger exceeding their 15kg personal checked baggage allowance will be charged for the excess at the applicable rate per kilo"
CABIN BAGGAGE:
The following cabin baggage restrictions apply per person (no infant allowance):
Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm* is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptops, shop purchases, camera etc). MUST be carried within your permitted 1 piece of cabin baggage). IMPORTANT - Extra/oversized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate, or where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of Euro/GBP 30. If you are unsure if your cabin bag complies then check at the Bag Drop desk before passing through airport security.

Oh dear, then in that case I think you'd best leave something behind. 10kg isn't much with a laptop etc.

Re: ryanair baggage question - hand luggage?
Hope you dont mind me high-jacking your thread here Wakkaday but I have a baggage question about Ryanair to and thought it would be better to use this thread than creating another.
It says you can have 3 bags upto 15k but when going to book its says how many bags do you want and its then £10 per bag per way. This confused me a little. Is this after the 3 bags upto 15k ? or is it £10 per bag, per way anyway ?

I've never had my hand luggage weighed, not even with ryanair.

Re: ryanair baggage question - hand luggage?
Its the size of the bag they mostly get you on. Has to be a certain size.
Jet2 are a pain for that, they made me pay £28 both ways for a bag that has flown all over the world as carry on luggage by my daughter on all sorts of airlines, but Jet2 said no to me even though she had taken it with them as well a year ago.

Last time I was at an airport the nice lady behind the desk asked me to come round to the back so she could check the weight and size of mine...

Re: ryanair baggage question - hand luggage?
If you want to avoid paying the charges for hold luggage on a short trip and dont have any of the banned items (scissors, razors, liquids, etc) with you then I normally only check in one cabin bag.
It's suprising how much you can fit in them. I bought a little suitcase on wheels that is 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and dont pay anything to take it onboard.
It goes in the overhoead lockers.
It also means on arrival you don't have to wait around for your bags to come out.

That makes sense now when I overheard them saying "he's a bit of a Thomas the tank"
