Dentist advice
Right for ages I been putting this off. Today I went doctors to get some antibiotics for a abcess under my tooth.
The doctor said I would need it X-rayed and possible root canal work.
Does root canal hurt?
I also have a massive phobia over needles. I try to avoid them as much as possible. Do any dentists still put patients to sleep or is it just needles now?
Any advice?

Re: Dentist advice
Yes root canal hurts. In root canal treatment they freeze the tooth they're going to work on, drill it out until they're through to the nerve then they put a solution onto the nerve to kill it off, this is painful but short lasting.
May need to be done a few times until the nerve is killed off.
As for the needle phobia, I'm terrified of the whole dentist process from sitting in the chair to getting worked on.
I have a great female dentist who knows I'd rather give birth than go visit her so before I get jagged she numbs where she's going to jag with a numbing gel.
When ready for the jag she opens my mouth the way she needs it to be and I close my eyes, haven't felt a thing yet.
What I've typed above is from experience so maybe other people have different experiences.
The most important thing is to find a dentist who understands your fears and is good at dealing with nervous patients.

If you have the needle it will be done quickly.Anaesthetic would probably involve a visit to the orthodontic centre at a main hospital..and thus may take longer waiting for an appointment.
I too hate needles in my mouth though I don't care about anywhere else. However IF you are in pain surely you can accept the needle long enough to get the pain sorted out..
Anyway see whether the antibiotics work first...

Re: Dentist advice
root canals dont hurt if the job is done all in one go without all of the mamby pamby filling paste to kill the root off having that done three times on three different visits prolongs your anxiety something wrotten (excuse the pun).
three injections around the tooth and my root canal was done in about 20 mins and I actually got to see the root once it had been removed, gory isnt it. but Ive actually been awake whilst having a hernia operation on a local anasethetic watching the proceedings and telling the surgeon jokes, he had to ask me to stop laughing so he could sew me up.
it will make you look after the rest of your teeth after having it done, take an MP3 player tell the dentist you want to listen to your MP3 music on full volume it will help block out the drill noise amplified by your skull.

Re: Dentist advice
I have the needle in the arm to relax me, and believe me, it really does the job!
I 100% recommend it. You'll need to take someone with you though to make sure you get home safely.

Re: Dentist advice
I have to say, as long as they numb the area root canal doesn't hurt but is slightly uncomfortable.

Re: Dentist advice
My root canal treatment was a living hell. I'll never ever, ever have it done again. What's worse is that it failed after a short time and the tooth had to be taken out anyway.

Re: Dentist advice
I wish I had not read this thread.
I too have a phobia of going to the dentist. It's normally ok once it is all done but the build up to the appointment is scary.

product 13,
they dont deserve being sectioned, my philosophy has always been hang them upside down by the balls with a cheesewire, but first deport them to Irac where no one will infringe their human rights.

Re: Dentist advice
I've had several done, wheather it hurts really depends on how well the dentist puts in the jabs. My current dentist is really good and it rarely hurts, even then he'll dribble anasthetic into the tooth as well as putting it in the gum. He even numbs the gum with a anasthetic stick before the needle goes in so I don't even feel the jab but then I pay for the privilage of going private and he can take his time to do the job properly.
I had one done a while ago by an NHS butcher and that *really* hurt.

Re: Dentist advice
I have a very good NHS dentist shams moopens in Northampton they are fast and most proceedures are quite painless, they seem to restore the confidence I lost from being gassed by a private dentist many years ago and waking up like a bear with a sore head spitting blood. I think it varies on the way they have been trained and their attitude towards making money and caring for their patients its a lot to balence all at once.

I advise discussing your needle phobia with your dentist, as an injection, properly done, means no pain during any procedure you have - my experience includes root fillings to enable fitting of 3 caps/crowns & two apicectomies.
I've been seeing the same dentist for nearly 20 years, now, & have found that relaxing during the 'jab' - especially the one they do right at the back which numbs the whole bottom jaw on that side, makes it easier for him to get done quickly = less pain & trauma for me ..
