Ford Diesel servicing intervals (1996 TD)

In need of some info pls.

Brought a 1996 (P) Ford Escort LX 1.8 TD est, full service up to 70k (1999) part to 123k (2009)

Servicing intervals, IE: what would I need to do and how often, dont have a prob doing the work myself but as this is my first oil burner just need to know what frequency I need to change the following.

Oil
Oil filter
Air filter
Fuel filter

Any other tid bits of information concerning escort diesels that I may need to be made aware of would be greatly appreciated.

my '92 tranny gets serviced every 15 thousand can't imagine an escort will be much different

Any Turbo no matter whether it is Diesel or Petrol I would recommend changing the oil and filter every 6000 miles tops (although I believe the manufacturers today recommend twice this)

I know many would call it overkill and on an old escort its certainly not necessary to oil change so regularly.

Unfortunately with longer and longer service intervals coupled with many more diesels on the road there are many modern so called clean (as in they didn't rattle or pump out clouds of smoke when new) diesels about which very often leaves me chocking on diesel smoke when I have the top down.

Depending on the quality of the oil, 6,000 / 12,000 miles. Fuel filter approx 24,000. Check the air filt every 6,000, (its easy to check) & change it when it needs, approx 18,000 miles.

If the oils crappy, you can use a flushing oil to clean the engine out. Also, treat your tank to a shot of injector cleaner. Don't forget to check the Power steering, brake fluid, Radiator, washer bottle, etc.

As you have just bought the car, do the lot, but check your pads & shoes too.

Popped out n got oil, filter and flushing additive, put additive in far car for 15 mins on tickover, got under car to remove sump nut only to find it rounded

cant shift the bloody thing, moles are only making it worse. I give up, someone shoot me pls.

With the moles, tighten them on the nut as hard as you can 'obviously lol' and then try to tap them clockwise, doing it this way you will have more rough to grip on and the clockwise movement, you only need a very small bit, will release the nut to thread grip, then try anti clockwise as normal to unscrew the nut.

Why I didnt think of this before I have no idea, my wife found it for me, excellent bit of kit.

All sorted now so no more stress

Thats a good bit of kit to keep, whatever you do, don't be tempted to put the old plug back. Get a new one. Correct me if I'm wrong, & double check this, but doesn't that engine require a 5/30 oil?? Not the normal run of the mill Diesel detergent.

Went to Sutton auto factors for the oil & bits, asked if oil i picked was ok and was told yes it was CARLUBE 15\30 semi sinth for diesel turbo and normally aspirated.
Didnt put old sump plug back A, it was totally mullered B, I always replace the sump plug when I do an oil service on my cars anyway. Halfords are quite cheap for these.

I do know that Zetec petrol engines need a 5\30 or a 0\30 (quite thin) but I cant find any reference for the TD, I'll have to pick a haynes and have a look see.

EDIT**
Just found in the owners HB oil should be 15\40 so I dont know if what I got would be much kop or if I could use it for a month or 2 and then change it for the right one.

Thats fine then m8, I wasn't sure, your engine wont come to any harm using the correct oil. Carlube is one of the cheaper oils, popular & available, I would check its condition at 6k miles. Personally I would change it after 6k, depending on use.

If you cover the distance quickly, you could extend the frequency to 10k, but 6k would be 2 years motoring for me, so I would change at 3k or 12 months. You can also get a diesel addative to keep the oil visko..........viksoc...........thicker. I have used them in the past, but there is nothing better than a regular oil change.

15/40 should be OK. Don't forget diesel oil will blacken quickly, If the engine is sweet & doesn't burn oil, treat it well & it should last. I have always rated a good turbo diesel, never more so than now, my 1400 Clio petrol returns 28 mpg around town, & the wife wont let me get rid of it.

There used to be a warning about mixing synth & non synth oils, I dont know if modern oils mix now, but just ensure you use the same oil to top up, & only change the specification when you do a full oil change.

You've got yourself a good engine there Al. The engines on them motors are good upto 200,000 miles plus. With the services I'd do them every 9000 miles just to be on the safe side. Make sure the timing belt has been changed with it having 70,000 miles on the clock make sure it's been changed because if it goes it will take all the engine out.

I'll check the paperwork to see if it has been done, I assume it has but you never know. Thanks for the heads up Nidge. Dont spose you'll have a ball park figure if I need to get it done. I know it had a new turbo last year and a clutch 18k ago.
