Specialist UK osteopathic surgeons

Evening campers. I have a friend in a predicament over the treatment she's been getting for a dodgy hip, and both she and I need some advice.

She has seen several doctors at Lincoln and Scunthorpe (she lives in Gainsborough) and they've all given her pills to manage the pain. The list of drugs given and recommended is as follows:
  • tramadol, 50mg, 2 tablets 4 times a day;
  • naproxen, 500mg, 1 tablet 2 times a day;
  • misoprostol, 200mg, 1 tablet 2 times a day;
  • amitrittyline, 25mg, 1 or 2 tablets every evening;
  • paracetamol, 500mg, 2 tablets 4 times a day.

Drug names apart from paracetamol are taken as she spelt them to me, so I've no idea if they're correct. She's fed up of popping these pills and wants something permanent done!

When she first had the problem a year ago, she had to be in a wheelchair to move about. She's since had physiotherapy and the hip put back in place, but it keeps slipping out, and MRI scans don't show up anything because it doesn't show up anything when she's laying down.

I'm going to be ringing both hospitals in Nottingham in the hope that I can speak to somebody not insane, as it's obvious to me she needs surgery and the doctors she sees aren't willing to do so. The only thing is I've no idea who the specialist UK osteopathic surgeons are, and where they are.

Anybody know?

My speciality's heart problems, since I have WPW and I'm seeing the surgeon who originally fixed me, and who will be fixing me again, in July. This is of no use to her!

Re: Specialist UK osteopathic surgeons

You can try using Dr Foster: DrFosterHealth The link is specifically for searching for a Hospital Consultant.

It would help to know the name of the condition and I am assuming that you mean orthopaedic surgeon and not osteopathic?
From what you describe, it sounds like a form of hip dysplasia but this is usually a paediatric problem

Try using the link. It will certainly give you details of orthopaedic surgeons in your area (through the use of your postcode) but what makes you think surgery is the 'obvious' option? Has the Consultant that your friend is under been asked why s/he is not 'willing to do so'? There may well be very good reason why this course of action is not appropriate.

Anyway, good luck.

Dammit, yes, orthopaedic. Knew it was one of them. I'll give that a go when I'm more refreshed. Thanks.

Sorry to hear of her pain, when you go to the QMC in Nottingham ask to speak to Miss Prince, she's one of the best orthopedic surgeons you can get. She sorted me out when I smashed my back up some years ago, she also sorted my mother out when she had a new knee and a new hip. She's one of the best surgeons about. If you want to see her I'd look sharp and hurry up she gets booked up fast.

Re: Specialist UK orthopaedic surgeons

If a mod could change "osteopathic" for "orthopaedic" in my original post and thread title that'd be helpful.

Finally got somewhere today. Rang Nottingham City Hospital, got through to Orthopaedics, spoke to an extremely helpful lady who gave the name of the consultant orthopaedic surgeon that also has a clinic at Newark Hospital Tuesday and Friday mornings. All my friend has to do now is see her GP to get a referral and hope and pray things work out smoothly.

If the GP doesn't want to refer her (even though she's entitled to a second opinion), I've told her to get me on the phone and I'll speak to him myself. I can be very tactful at times, but also very forceful.

Re: Specialist UK osteopathic surgeons

This is the place that rebuilds me every few years

http://www.roh.nhs.uk/

Small specialist hospital, spotlessly clean, great folks working there, I simply can't praise it enough.

Don't forget that she can also be referred to any hospital she chooses if she's not having any luck in your area.

But don't be under the misapprehension that just by being referred that you will get to have an appointment at the hospital or department of your choice.
If the hospital of your preferred location is not in your health authority's region, it might be possible but probably only if you are prepared to wait a lot longer than you hope or expect. It may also depend on which hospital clinics are offered up as choices within the Choose and Book facility Many, if not most, patients find that their choice of locations is actually limited to their local health authority.
This is because it is your GP that has determined which hospitals are provided as options and are supposedly clinically appropriate for you. If you are not happy with any of the options you are given, then try speaking to your GP and if that is unsuccessful, then try your local PALs officer.

It sounds like you,Turkey Machine, have got a bit closer to resolving your problem but if the GP proves to be recalcitrant, try the local PALS office and hopefully they will be able to provide you with further assistance or at the very least guidance which as forum users we cannot.

Just out of interest, you say your friend started to have this 'problem' about a year ago. Was it as a result of an accident or was there no discernible cause? Had she dislocated her hip at any time in her life or had she been able to do it at will?
If you don't know, it don't matter
