Japanese translation - help needed
Hi guys. My eldest is currently studying for his karate black belt and I would like to surprise him with a personalised embroidered black silk belt when he finally achieves his ambition. Ideally I want to translate his name into Japanese and include a meanignful message in Japanese symbols on the belt but am finding that although there are some sites on the web which give translations, my PC won't display them properly if at all.
Does anyone know of a reliable free online tranlsation service which will cope with English to Japanese and do I need to download some extra software to display these Japanese characters?
Thanks folks

You can do your name on http://japanesetranslator.co.uk/your-name-in-japanese/ & save the JPG image. This could be imported to Word or any Program to Print out & glue to a Card. Or trace it on a Belt.

Here are a couple of links the first one says they do English to Japanese translations on the belts.

One last thought. Possibly a Japanese forum may be a good place to ask as there may be special characters relating to martial arts. Here's one:

Re: Japanese translation - help needed
As a rule foreign names and words use the Kana script, effectively the upper case of the hiragana. There are 42 main phonetic characters. Use the closest approximation as certain sounds from English have no direct Japanese equivelent e.g. St Also L and R are not distinguished with the Japanese language having a sound intermediate between them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kana Table of sounds here.

Yes apparently that's quite common.
Since posting, I've found a few professional looking sites with the words/symbols (kanji) I want so it's looking good.
Thanks again.

No not yet - don't want to tempt fate as his Black Belt grading is still around 6 months away, barring injuries etc.....
