My new carpet quote anygood?
Hi guys long time kno see well i get straight to the point, i have recently moved into a new property with no carpet . My my living room is 15.6 sqm and my bed room is 12.8 sqm and i was quoted from united carpets with free fitting, underlay and a 3.99 per sqm carpet reduced from 4.99 per sqm... £250 all together
At first he said around £300 but i manage to naggle him down to £250 is this a good price or will i be able to get a better price somewhere else?
Any help much apreciated

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
come back a yard lol
30 square metres x £4 per square metre = £120 free fitting so you have grippers and doorbars whats that cost 30 quid? so they are charging you £100 for underlay? nearly as much as your carpet?

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
If you're happy with the carpet, and the underlay, and the price, then yes it's a good price.
Keep in mind though that the underlay and fitting aren't 'free' - they might not be listed in the cost, and they might be advertised as free, but United Carpets can't afford to give you underlay and fitting for nothing. They're making the money to cover it somewhere.
When I was selling carpets we could afford to offer them at 50% off and still make a profit (some times 100% on the cost price).
You also need to consider how long you want the carpet to last - at £3.99 per square metre it should last fine in the bedroom for a few years, but if you get heavy traffic in the living room then I would think you'll probably start to notice wear there in a couple of years (if not sooner) - the exception to this might be if it's one of the 'berber' style carpets (made of lots of loops) where it's more difficult to see the wear.
Like I said though, you get what you pay for - if you're happy with the price, and can live with the fact that (at that price) you're getting a cheap carpet and underaly, then yes it's a good price.

Actually, just realised you're not saying that the underlay's free. Sorry about that. Still an ok price I guess, if you're happy with the quality. Given that you're paying about as much for the underlay as you are the carpet (as zing says) I would imagine that's were they're making their money (in fact that's where most carpet companies make most of their money).
As for the underlay costing as much as the carpet, that's not necessarily a problem - a decent underlay can easily run to £6/7 per square metre.

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
Isn't it also important to know what width the carpet comes in, in relation to the room size?
If the carpet is in 3m width rolls you could be having to buy extra to do the room, depending on where the join is etc.

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
Nope.
At that price the carpet will be 4m wide only.
So the OP will be buying one piece at 3.9m x 4m for the living room, and 3.2m x 4m for the bedroom.

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
The Underlay can hike up the cost of the flooring quite a bit, but without it your carpet just won't last at all.
Also worth baring in mind hard flooring will have similar underlay requirements.

You might not, depending on where the widest part of each room is.

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
No, not necessarily.
Impossible to know from the sizes you've quoted whether or not they'll come out of a 4m wide roll in one piece.
If you want to give me the room sizes I'll work it out for you.

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
If you're measuring make sure you measure between the widest points, and go into the doorways.
---------- Post added at 15:40 ---------- Previous post was at 15:39 ----------
What are the sizes in the other direction though? Have those sizes taken into account any recesses, doorways, etc?

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
10m
10 cm should be ok, but don't forget that you need to allow for the fitters to be able to 'poke' down the back of the gripper rods, normally 2.5cm on the size.
Let's say your living room was bang on 3.8m (into the doorway) x 3.9m (between the two walls across the width) then I'd be wanting to allow 3.9m x 4m. If your room is 3.8 x 3.9 and you've only gone wall to wall you might find that 3.9m x 4m is a bit tight - especially if one of the walls runs out slightly.

Re: My new carpet quote anygood?
If all you have is a standard door way between the rooms it might just be easier to have a join in the doorway. Imagine the fitter trying to get a huge piece of carpet through a door which has to remain attached to another similar sized piece and stretch it on the the grippers whist keeping it flat. However if the rooms are more open plan it should be fine.
Price seems ok and unless you want to go chasing round elsewhere or are not happy with the quality and the guy is not claiming the offer will expire if you don't take it up now (pressure sales tactic) then you should go for it.
