I don't want to turn it into an anti 4x4 thread, but think it's apparent that very few who do have them, know how to use them. The recent bad weather has proven that where the first people not to drive anywhere have the "Surrey Tractor". On the other hand is it really the case that these vehicles need to be adapted for off road use, by changes to tyres and such like. Thus the everyday road user get's no significant advantage from a 4x4?

In this recent weather I think the point has been proven that having 4x4 slapped on the back doesn't actually mean anything, I've seen some very expensive "Surrey Tractor"s as Rob puts it really struggling and we haven't seen anywhere near the brunt of this weather here that some parts of the country have!
You dont need to adapt them at all for driving green lanes or getting out of fields etc, but some of us like to play hard and need the extra clearance and more grippy tyres.
btw, I no way condone silly home modifications that wont pass an SVA test.
Nor do I condone ripping up the countryside, responsible owners are generally members of clubs and abide by set guidlines.
I have a 93 Isuzu Trooper swb 3.1TDI with a 2" lift, 265/75/16 BFGs and use it a lot
I also organise meets so peeps can get muddy and show off there best "how to get stuck" techniques.
Sooooo, what do you have and do you fancy getting dirty
i dont intend to turn this into an anti 4+ 4 thread but in all honesty the ones that p*s me off are the lady drivers who get the macho streak and havent a clue how to reverse them
